John continues in our passage to warn us of the times we are in. Today the warning is about the antichrists, the false teachers, that seek to turn us away from Jesus Christ.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I enter into your presence, I wait expectantly to hear from you today. Fill me with your Spirit and illuminate what you have for me. Let my heart trust that you are the God who meets with his people and you will meet with me at this moment.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Colossians 3…
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4
Today we are reflecting on the words of John in 1 John 2:18-25, where we read:
Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
1 John 2:18-25
We are in the last hour now just as they were then. We have been in the last hour since Jesus ascended back into heaven. There is a sense of urgency because we are in the last hour to heed the warning John is about to give. This warning matters. So what is the warning? The warning is that there are antichrists, who are described as false teachers, who are seeking to lead you astray. So who are these antichrists? John speaks of them in the plural sense. He refers to the single antichrist that will come one day in the final days, but for now, these antichrists are false teachers among the church. They are false teachers because they seek to turn people against Jesus Christ or they seek to replace Jesus as Christ. He describes them in three ways:
1. They left the fellowship of the Church. (Verse 19)
2. They have not been anointed by the Holy Spirit, so they don’t know or proclaim the truth. (Verse 20)
3. They deny Jesus and likewise deny the Father. (Verse 22/23)
If we have come to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ we have been given the Holy Spirit to help us discern and deny the false teachers of our day. The Holy Spirit gives us all knowledge and now we can know the Son and be in relationship with the Father.
John ends with a command and a promise. The command is to abide in what we have heard from the beginning. We are commanded to let the truth of the gospel abide in us. Abide means two things. One to accept the truth of the gospel in its untainted form. The second is to interact with the truth and let it control your thinking and actions. If the truth that we have heard from the beginning abides in us then we will know the Son and the Father. That leads to the promise of Jesus that we will be with him forever in eternity.
Holy Spirit, I ask that you would fill me with all knowledge. Fill me with the truth. Let me discern the lies and those who seek to lead me away from the truth in my life.
Reflection Questions:
1) What do false teachers look like today?
2) What would it look like for me to abide in the truth of the gospel today?
Lord, would you protect your children around the world from the lies? Would you give us the discernment and ability to seek and root out any false teachers with big and small platforms? Protect the purity of your Church worldwide, so that the truth of the gospel can be proclaimed.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

Yielding Prayer
Lord, I surrender to your truth. I give my life to the gospel that you gave me. Give me your Spirit to take it as you have given it. Not just parts of it, but the whole of your Scriptures. Holy Spirit, I ask for your power today to discern and flee from false teachers. Let not my heart be troubled or be afraid, but leave me with your peace.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 14…
These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:25-26
Closing Prayer
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.1
