John comes to us with the truth that we are a part of the family of God or the family of the devil those are the two options.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, I approach your throne today in total confidence. I come to you confidently in prayer, not in my own merit or worth, but the only confidence I have is that Jesus, your beloved Son, suffered and died on my behalf. His blood is my access to you and it’s in his name alone that I pray.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people because Jesus taught us to pray like this…
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Matthew 6:13
Today we are reflecting on the words of John in 1 John 3:4-10 where we read:
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
1 John 3:4-10
John is very clear throughout this whole letter. He is clear that because of who God is his people live differently. The opposite is true as well, for those who do not know God their life follows the trajectory of the devil.
John breaks down the world and all of humanity into one of two families. The first is the family of God and the other is the family of the devil.
The family of God is what John has been writing about and will continue to describe. We are children of God when we know God. Because we know God, we do not make a practice of sinning. We are fighting against the sin that clings to us. We have been born of God and because of that, we have been given the seed of God. We chase after righteousness in our life because God is righteous. John again uses phrases like “abides in him” to show us how we flee from sin and cling to God. We abide in him and we allow his power to fight our flesh. The children of God are not perfect, but they do have the Holy Spirit that brings conviction to the lifestyle of sin. The family of the devil cannot say the same.
The family of the devil is described as those who make a habit of practicing sin and because of that, they practice lawlessness, because sin is lawlessness. We see the practice of sinning is of the devil because the devil has been sinning since the beginning. He brought sin into this world.
Here’s the beauty in the midst of this stern warning and description. Jesus appeared in order to take away our sins. It is only through his life, death, resurrection, and ascension that we receive his grace and his righteousness. And John tells us what we are to do, we are to abide in him. We run to him because the same power that raised him from the dead now lives in us. We ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with his power and transform us to flee from the devil and make us righteous.
Jesus, I ask that you show me where I live in lawlessness. Would you open my eyes to the destruction of sin in my life? Let me understand that the devil has come to seek, kill, and destroy me. The devil has no good intentions for my life. Fill me with your Spirit that makes me alive with you and a slave to righteousness.
Reflection Questions:
1) Where is there sin in my life that I have become okay with?
2) What would my life look like to practice righteousness?
Our Father and our God, I come to you now to ask for revival in our nation. I pray that your Spirit would fall on your Church. Would you wake us from our slumber and free us from our love of this world? I ask that you would manifest yourself in a supernatural way in this season of time and draw all people to yourself. Come in such power and glory that we would know that this was of you and not the work of human hands. Hear the cry of my heart and respond oh Lord!
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

Yielding Prayer
Lord, I lay down my life in pursuit of your righteousness. Let me forget the world and all of its devices. Break me of the sinful habits that enslave me. Your Spirit is powerful and let that power transform me. Let my life be evidence that I am a child of God. I yield my life not to the pleasures of this world, but to the righteousness that you have purchased for me.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8:16-17…
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:16-17
Closing Prayer
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me. Amen.1
