“If one member [of the Body] suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” (1 Cor. 12:26)
This Sunday, we will recognize the International Day of Prayer for the persecuted Church. One in seven Christians worldwide face extreme persecution, simply for claiming the name of Jesus for their salvation–a gift of grace that we can so easily take for granted. That is why we should take time this weekend to remember them in prayer.
One of my sons came home deeply troubled last week, following a school history lesson on the Holocaust. He begged me to talk to his teacher and request a pass from his reading assignment on the subject. After all, he reasoned, “Why should I have to learn about things from the past that are so scary?”
I answered, “Because those things really happened, and they can happen again. That’s why it’s so important for us to share Jesus with everyone we meet.”
What I did not have the heart, yet, to tell him is that the most horrific acts against flesh and blood ever devised by wicked men still happen today. And they are happening against our own every single day. So, let this weekend remind us all to be fervent in our prayers for our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world.
