Personal Worship

As we continue in the power category of the spiritual gifts we arrive at the gift of healing.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into your presence give me a heart of praise and thanksgiving for who you are. Please focus my heart, letting all distractions and worries fade away as I meet with you. This world will have enough troubles of its own today, so let me take heart because you have overcome the world.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in John 10:

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

       John 10:14-15

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture, where we read:

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

      1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way

      1 Corinthians 12:27-31

As we arrive at the gift of healing so do our baggage and misconceptions about the gift of healing. We have to remember the goal of our study is not to be reactive to how poorly the spiritual gifts have been used in this world. Our goal is to see what Scripture says and see if God has more for us through the Holy Spirit and his gifts.

We see right away that Paul does not call it the gift of healing, but the gifts of healing. It seems that Paul did not envision that a person would be endowed with one healing gift operative at all times for all diseases. His language suggests either many different gifts of healing, each appropriate to and effective for its related illness, or each occurrence of healing constituting a distinct gift in its own right. One obstacle to the understanding of healing is the erroneous assumption that if anyone could ever heal, he could always heal. We see illnesses linger after years of prayer in Scripture and in this world. So we have to come to the conclusion that it is better to view this gift as subject to the will of God. We don’t heal people God does! The gift of healing is occasional and subject to the sovereign purposes of God. It is not up to our will that people are healed, but it is up to God’s. The truth is God is merciful and compassionate and cares about our physical bodies, which is why sometimes he heals.

Our motto for healing is stolen from Alpha and it goes like this: “We used to never pray for healing and no one was healed. Now we pray for healing all the time and sometimes God heals.” God delights when we take our hands out of our pockets, pray for healing, and expectantly wait for a move of the Spirit. God wants us to regularly pray for the sick. God has also gifted us with a beautiful medical system in this country. So we see our doctors, we get the cancer meds and we allow God to heal in that fashion as well. We keep praying throughout it all though! Here are a couple of observations that hopefully will encourage us to fix our faith on God and his power and pray regularly for the sick.

1. Healing and health are portrayed in Scripture as the blessing of God.
2. All sickness is suffering, not all suffering is sickness.
3. Sickness and disease in and of themselves do not glorify God. Our unwavering faith, loyalty, and love for God in spite of sickness and disease do glorify God.
4. We must leave room for mystery in God’s ways. There will always be things that cannot be explained.
5. God’s heart is for healing. He’s compassionate and gracious to his children.
6. We must be willing to bear the stigma of failure as we pray. We have succeeded when we have obeyed the Scriptures to pray for the sick. Whether or not they are healed rests with God.
7. We pray expectantly, not presumptuously. Praying presumptuously is when the person claims to heal without a revelatory warrant, or on the unbiblical assumption that God always wills to heal then and there.

So we pray for healing. We pray expectantly when we pray a humble petition to a merciful God for something that we don’t deserve, but that God delights to give.

Ask

Lord, open my eyes to what you have for me. I want to have everything that you have created for me to have. Give me the desire to pursue the gifts that your Spirit has given me. Give me wisdom and discernment to identify and use what you have bestowed upon me.

1)How do the gifts of healing build up the body of Christ?
2)How can this gift be applied and used?
3)What characteristics does someone who has been given this gift have?
4)Have I been given this gift, why or why not?

We pray that by your Spirit living and breathing through us, we would be light and love in a world that so desperately needs your hope. Draw many to know you as Savior and Lord. Shine your light, and push back the forces of darkness that surround. By your great power Lord, open blind eyes and release those still imprisoned.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are gracious and compassionate and I rest in that truth. You care about your people and their bodies. Give me a heart that prays for the sick. I surrender to you that obedience looks like prayer in this life. Give me the confidence to pray expectantly whenever I come into contact with someone in need of healing. I ask that you would heal and I know that you sometimes do.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 16:33:

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

       John 16:33

Closing Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me with love. Fill me with joy. Fill me with peace. Fill me with patience. Fill me with kindness. Fill me with goodness. Fill me with faithfulness. Fill me with gentleness. Fill me with self-control. Let me walk in your Spirit today as I leave here.
