Personal Worship

We enter into the Book of Acts and meet a woman who is spiritually delivered by the power of the Holy Spirit through Paul.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your throne today let me feel the gravity of both your holiness and your mercy. That you are the King of Kings, yet as your child, you invite me into your throne room. I ask that you would meet me and care for me during this time

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 31:16:

Make your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your steadfast love!

    Psalm 31:16

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Acts 16:16-18, where we read:

 As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.

    Acts 16:16-18

God does not only deliver physically, but spiritually. As Paul and his group are moving about the town they meet this woman who is a slave. This woman has a spirit of divination and she made money by telling fortunes to those who desired that. Let’s break down what a spirit of divination is because it is far worse than it sounds. This poor woman was possessed. The original Greek literally says she has a “spirit of a python”. According to myth, Python was a snake that guarded the Temple of Apollo and was eventually killed by Apollo. Later the word python came to mean a demon-possessed person through whom Python spoke. So here is this woman possessed by a demon who is used to make money for other people using the power that controls her. She is not in control of who she is. The interesting part is she is crying out the truth about who Paul is and about who God is. It seems like this could be a good thing for both parties. A woman yelling the truth about who Paul is might be able to draw a little larger crowd and might attract some business for her. Paul knows that this would be confusing for the crowd though because he sees the situation for what it is. It is reminiscent of when demon-possessed people would encounter Jesus and tell the truth about who he is. Jesus would always rebuke the demon and set the person free. Paul does exactly that as well. In the name of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit he commands the demon to come out of her and it does. She is set free from the demon-possessed prison that she has lived in. For the first time in who knows how long she can have a clear mind and be in control of herself. She received freedom by being spiritually delivered. There may be a spiritual war going on, but God is more powerful than any demon could ever be.

Ask

Jesus, I ask that you would open my eyes to those around me. Show me where I need to be delivered spiritually. Show me those around me who need me to pray and come before you on their behalf to be healed.

        1)How comfortable am I with talking about the spiritual world in our modern day?
        2)Have I been blinded to the spiritual world by our modern culture that is hyper-focused on the material and physical?
        3)Is there anything that is ailing me spiritually that I would like deliverance from?
        4)Who can I be praying for to be delivered spiritually?

Lord, I want to see revival in this world, in my country, in my city, and in my home. Begin that revival with me. Wake me in the places I have fallen asleep. Clear out the cobwebs of my soul. Break me of the mute idols that I cling to. Set me ablaze and let that fire spread for your glory and your glory alone.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, conversations about the spiritual world can be odd and confusing at times. As I read your Word today I saw that you have the power of demons and you have power over the spiritual realm. Give me the honesty to ask and work through the questions that I have about that. In that same vein though give me the courage to be obedient in faith when I don’t have all the answers. I ask for deliverance for the parts of my spirit that are ailed. I ask too for the deliverance of those who are fighting a spiritual battle and need your deliverance in their lives at this very moment.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Psalm 32:7:

ou are a hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from trouble;
    you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

       Psalm 32:7

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
