Personal Worship

We continue in the Book of Galatians as Paul describes a confrontation between him and Peter that has gospel consequences.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into your presence remind me of what you say in Zephaniah 3:17. You are the God who is in my midst. You are the God who is mighty to save. You rejoice over me with gladness. You quiet my restless heart with your love. Through every aspect of my life, you are singing over me. Bury these truths deep down in my soul as I enter into my time with you.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 16:

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord
I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.

      Psalm 16:1-3

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Galatians 2:11-14, where we read:

But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

      Galatians 2:11-14

Paul takes us back to the city of Antioch. Antioch was a city with a large Jewish population and one of the very first places Jewish Christians preached the gospel to Gentiles. We have to remember what a meal meant in their day and age. It was not just a meal, but it was fellowship. Remember how horrified people were that Jesus ate with sinners? A meal was a table of fellowship and it was a difficult place during the days of the early church to bring Jews and Gentile Christians together.

Paul’s words are very serious about Peter who is referred to as Cephas in this passage. Cephas was the name given to him by Jesus because on this rock the Church will be built. Paul says he confronted Peter to his face because he stood condemned. Why did he stand condemned? Because he was living out a gospel that was against the one true gospel. When the circumcision party came to town Peter sided with them. He sided with them on the fact that in order to become a Christian you must be circumcised first. It was not only bad that Peter fell to this, but he brought others in the Jewish Christian community because of his status as an Apostle. Paul is showing the Galatians that there is no place for this in the Christian faith because it is against everything the gospel stands for. He is showing them that he has already protected this gospel even to Peter’s face himself. It is a lesson for our contemporary church that when our actions don’t match our beliefs there is something wrong.

Put yourself in Paul’s shoes and how seriously he takes the gospel if he is willing to call out Peter publicly for his public sin. Paul is a protector of the true gospel and he cares for its purity of it. Adding anything to the gospel actually detracts from the beauty and purity of the gospel.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me where I am out of step with the gospel today in my own life. Reveal the log in my eye before the speck in my brother or sisters. I ask that you give me discernment and courage in protecting the peace and purity of the gospel in your Church. Show me where my life is out of step with my beliefs.

1)How would I grade Paul on his confrontation with Peter?
2)In a world that is as divided and as confrontational as ever what part do I play in the protection of the true gospel of Jesus Christ?
3)Where currently do I see our culture out of step with the gospel as Paul defines it?
4)Where is the way I am living out of step with what I believe?

You are the God who moves. I ask that you would do exactly what you have done in every century throughout history. Move in your people. Awake the sleepers. Save the lost. Meet this world in a supernatural way that brings you all the glory. We are crying out for a broken and messy world that needs your love so desperately.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Jesus, I yield to your Word above all. In my daily life, I am surrounded by decisions about how to live by your Word. Would you give me wisdom on when to speak and when to listen? Would you give me courage in the world to protect the sanctity of your gospel? Let me not look for a fight or confrontation, but allow me to fight for the purity of beauty of your work on the cross!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Ephesians 2:8-9:

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

      Ephesians 2:8-9

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
