Personal Worship

We begin the week in Genesis looking at the story of Sarah and Hagar, which will give us the background we need to be in Galatians the rest of the week.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace; through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 84:

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, faints
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
    to the living God.
Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
    my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
    ever singing your praise!

      Psalm 84:1-4

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Genesis 16, where we read:

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”  The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.”  And the angel of the Lord said to her,

“Behold, you are pregnant
    and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
because the Lord has listened to your affliction.

He shall be a wild donkey of a man,
    his hand against everyone
    and everyone’s hand against him,
and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”

So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

      Genesis 16:1-16

Paul will take us back into Genesis this week in Galatians, so today will be a refresher on the characters and the situations they find themselves in so we are ready for the rest of the week. God came to Abraham with the promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. The problem in Genesis 16 is years after that promise was made, Sarah his wife is still barren. Not only is she still barren but they are in their 80s at this point in their life. They remember the promise, but they are focused on their earthly circumstances. With what they can see they do not believe that God is going to fulfill his end of the bargain. The waiting became too much for them to take any longer.  So they take matters into their own hands. In their doubting Abraham takes his maidservant and has a child with her and they name the child Ishmael. A decade and change after this miraculously Sarah gets pregnant and has a son named Isaac. This begins the tale of two sons that Paul will discuss this week in his letter to the Galatians.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you fill me with your Spirit so that I will trust you even when my eyes only see obstacles.

1)Where is it easy for me right now to lose trust in God?
2)Where am I waiting on a promise from God to be fulfilled?
3)How can I wait and be faithful in trusting the Lord during this season?

Wake us up, Lord! Remind us to live aware, to redeem the time, to listen to your words, and to be willing to make a difference in the places you’ve called us to be. Thank you for your mighty power that acts on behalf of your children. Out of your kindness, please extend to us your grace and freedom. Cover us with your protection. Empower us with your strength. We ask for an awakening of your presence in our own lives and in the world around us, as never seen before. We pray for your help to be faithful to proclaim your name, and that all the enemy’s plans to silence the name of Jesus would be crushed.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. May the Lord judge between you and me!” But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, this day I decide to yield in obedience to whatever you have for me. Lord forgive me for my desire to have everything and to have it on my own timeline. You are God and I am not. So in that fill me with your Holy Spirit and give me a supernatural trust in who you are. Lord, in my waiting, be gracious to me.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Galatians 5:1:

For freedom Christ has set us free

      Galatians 5:1

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
