Personal Worship

We are back in Galatians today as Paul continues to point us toward the promise!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace; through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 84:

Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
As they go through the Valley of Baca
    they make it a place of springs;
    the early rain also covers it with pools.
They go from strength to strength;
    each one appears before God in Zion.
O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
    give ear, O God of Jacob!

      Psalm 84:5-8

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Galatians 4:21-23, where we read:

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

       Galatians 4:21-23

We have to remind ourselves of the argument Paul has been making and will continue to make. The church in Galatia was been taught by false teachers that the law has to be added to the gospel. That they not only need to come to faith in Jesus, but they also have to become good Jews who abide by all of the law. Paul continues to show them the craziness of that claim. He asks them if that is what they are doing are they really understand the law at all. He shows them that while they are proud of being sons of Abraham due to their heritage they need to remember that Abraham had two sons. One son, Ishmael, was born while Abraham was not trusting the promise. Ishmael was born to a mother and a father who was taking the work of God into their own hands. The other son is the son of promise, Isaac. The son that God promised to them and would fulfill through his supernatural power. Paul has given them a historical example of the two options in this life. One is the false belief that it is based on our efforts and the other is the true belief that it is wholly based on the promise.

Ask

Lord, give me faith to see that it is all your power that brings me to faith and to life. Break me of my desire to do it in my own strength.

        1)Where in my life do I continue to go to the law for life?
        2)Why is it so hard for me to trust the promise of God at times?

Wake us up, Lord! Remind us to live aware, to redeem the time, to listen to your words, and to be willing to make a difference in the places you’ve called us to be. Thank you for your mighty power that acts on behalf of your children. Out of your kindness, please extend to us your grace and freedom. Cover us with your protection. Empower us with your strength. We ask for an awakening of your presence in our own lives and in the world around us, as never seen before. We pray for your help to be faithful to proclaim your name, and that all the enemy’s plans to silence the name of Jesus would be crushed.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

       Galatians 4:21-23

Yielding Prayer

Lord, just like the Galatians I need this reminder. Remind me that it is your faithfulness that keeps me not my own merit. Let this reminder push me into the arms of a Savior who loves me today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Galatians 5:1:

For freedom Christ has set us free

      Galatians 5:1

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
