Personal Worship

Paul walks us through a list of the works of the flesh today.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are the living water. I approach your throne thirsty and desperate for your presence. As I enter in allow me to lay it all down at your feet because there is no better place for me to bring all of my praise, all of my fears, and all of my needs today. Meet with me and fill me with your Spirit.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 65:1-4:

Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion,
and to you shall vows be performed.
O you who hear prayer,
to you shall all flesh come.
When iniquities prevail against me,
    you atone for our transgressions.
Blessed is the one you choose and bring near,
    to dwell in your courts!
We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house,
    the holiness of your temple!

      Psalm 65:1-4

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Galatians 5:18-21, where we read:

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

      Galatians 5:18-21

Paul shows us that the works of the flesh are just as much attitudes as they are actions. Both are just as much over-desires of our flesh.

Paul begins the works of the flesh beginning with sexuality. Sexual immorality is defined as sexual intercourse between unmarried people. Then he moves on to impurity referring to unnatural sexual practices and relationships. He ends the sexuality section with sensuality in reference to uncontrolled sexuality.

In verse 20 Paul enters into works of the flesh in reference to religion with idolatry and sorcery. He is referring to specific occult and pagan religious practices. The first is providing an inadequate substitute for God, and the second is faking the work of the Spirit.

Paul follows that with eight words about how the flesh destroys relationships. Four of the words are destructive attitudes: rivalries, jealousy, enmity, and envy. The other four words describe the results of these attitudes: strife, fits of anger, dissensions, and divisions.

Paul ends his specific list with drunkenness and orgies showing us that one of the works of the flesh is an addiction to pleasure-creating substances and behavior.

Paul ends with a warning about this list. Paul refers to the habitual practice, rather than infrequent and repented-of lapses. He is referring to someone who continually indulges the sinful nature without battling against it. This shows that the Son has not redeemed them and that the Spirit has not renewed them. Paul is not looking to undermine our Christian assurance here, he is just trying to help us destroy our sense of complacency.

Ask

Jesus, open my eyes to the works of the flesh in me today. Show me where I desire those things that are not from you. Let me repent and confess to you those today.

1)Out of this list where is my sinful nature drawn to?
2)Will I confess and repent today? Will I invite the Holy Spirit to transform and conform me away from my sinful nature and make me like Christ?

Lord, look upon your people and have mercy on us. We are lost like sheep without a shepherd. We need your Spirit to be poured out on us. Fill us with your Spirit and allow us to walk by the Spirit in this world. Revive our hearts and change our desires in this life.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I seek to obey you today. You have set me free through your work on the cross, so allow me today to experience that freedom. I know my sinful nature seeks to keep me in bondage. So today I take whatever sin is clinging to me and I lay it down in confession. In that confession, I have no fear because I know you are faithful and just to forgive me. Transform and conform me not by my own power, but by the power of your Holy Spirit today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

      1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
