Hey Church!

Have you ever wondered what worship will be like in heaven? The Bible gives us a few patterns and peeks behind the curtain that inform our imaginations, but it does not offer answers to some of our more practical questions. Questions like, “When we sing to God in the New Heavens and Earth… 

• “What will the musical style, or genre sound like?”
• “In what language will we sing?”
• “Will everyone have the same biases they have now?” i.e. Inclinations of the head (reason), heart (spirit), or guts (appetites). 
• “What will it be like, when instruments, languages, and people from all regions and epochs of history play and sing together?”
• “Just how loud are the voices that “sound like many roaring waters’?” (Rev. 14:2-3)
• “Will there be set start and end times to corporate/organized times of worship, like there are today?” 

We may not be able to answer those questions perfectly yet, but I have found it to be a productive (and fun!) mental exercise to, from time to time, compare and contrast what worship will be like then versus now. Granted, not all questions are equally important; my curiosity about languages and instruments is a cool thing to think about but it has little to teach me about how to engage with God in the here and now. But questions that force me to evaluate my posture, expectations, motivations, or preferences in worship can be especially revealing. 

The worship of heaven will be absolutely pure and full of the Spirit. Our worship services each Sunday are meant to be a foretaste of that great Day. Make this your thought project this weekend: “What will be different about the way I worship when sin is no more and I see Jesus face to face?” Come to church this Sunday with that vision at the forefront of your mind’s eye and ask the Spirit to reveal to you any ways in which your earthly worship can be more like it will be in heaven.
