We plan to sing the song “We Will Not Be Shaken” this Sunday. As I have said many times before, it is the kind of song Paul and Silas would have sung from their dungeon (See Acts 16:16-34 to review their story). More sobering is the thought that if the enemies of truth continue to have their way in our world, you and I may soon be imprisoned for our faith. When that day comes, I hope our Rio Vista Church flock will have the courage to fill every hall and corner of their prisons with this resounding song of faith.
Before reading on, click this YouTube link to listen to “We Will Not Be Shaken”:
(Chorus)
For we trust in our God
And through His unfailing love
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
(Verse)
Though the battle rages we will stand in the fight
Though the armies rise up against us on all sides
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
We will not be shaken
(Pre-Chorus)
For in the hour of our darkest day
We will not tremble we won’t be afraid
Hope is rising like the light of dawn
Our God is for us He has overcome
(Bridge)
All those against Him will fall for our God is stronger
He can do all things
No higher name we can call for Jesus is greater
We can do all things

Can you imagine it? The most despairing dungeons would become beacons of joy and confident hope in Jesus! How brightly the light of Christ will shine when that day comes.
But before we resign ourselves to the day of persecution, let us briefly consider what we must do to delay its coming.
In short, we are in a crisis of truth.
My friend Sam Kastensmidt has brilliantly observed that Disney movies reflect the spirit of the age. So it occurred to me that the world’s perspective on the subject of truth is made clear by the legendary pirate of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow, and his most prized possession: a compass that does not point north. At first, viewers are led to believe, with the buffoonish traditionalists who mock him for it, that his compass is worthless (and therefore he is a worthless pirate). But later we learn that the reason it does not align with the cardinal headings is that it does something far better: the compass points not to true north but “to the thing you want most.”
Let that sink in. We are descending into a lawless void where truth is defined within an individual, and its cultural collective, and not by any higher, immovable force. If history can teach us anything, we can say with a high degree of certainty that the result will be a godless anarchy, followed by the ascent of a virtue-signaling tyrant who promises a life of ease in exchange for our freedoms. Why? Because the human heart is deceitful, wicked, and not to be trusted as a reliable guide (Jer. 17:9).
If ever there was a time to pick up your Bible and read with feverish zeal, my brothers and sisters, this is most certainly it. One of the defining characteristics of a Christian is that truth comes from God’s own revelation–generally in creation, and specifically in Jesus and Scripture. Our world desperately needs the Church to WAKE UP and cling to the Word of God and share it like it matters.
Here’s what our forefathers in the faith believed about the Word:
“Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence, do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of his will, which is necessary unto salvation; therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in divers manners, to reveal himself, and to declare that his will unto his Church; and afterwards, for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which maketh the holy Scripture to be most necessary; those former ways of God’s revealing his will unto his people being now ceased.” (WCF, I.I)
Tolle lege!
