Personal Worship

This week we look at the “Hard Saying” of Jesus about the cost of following him.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I come to you this morning I ask that your Word that I read and meditate on not return void in my heart. Let your Word accomplish the task that you have set before it and let it succeed in the way you have sent it. Bury the truths you have for me today in my heart.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 100:

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

      Psalm 100:1-5

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Luke 9:57-62 where we read:

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

      Luke 9:57-62

You can say many things about Jesus, but you can never say he tried to hide the cost of following him. Much to the disciples’ displeasure at times Jesus is very forward about what it costs to follow him. Jesus is saying if you want to follow me look at the life I live. That the eternal Son of God left heaven and came to earth. That the God who all things were created for and to had no place to lay his head. Jesus gave up the comfort of heaven and his people will be asked to give up the comforts of this life. Then the next person comes along and he wants to bury his father. Jesus seems harsh here. We have to look at the nature of the request. On first reading, it seems like this man’s father is dead and all he wants to do is bury him. That seems like a normal request, so why does Jesus respond the way he does? In Jewish tradition, they would have buried the body of a loved one within 24 hours. The time in between the death and the burial all of the family would have stayed together and mourned. So it seems that was not the case with this man. It seems that his father was still alive and what he was saying is that once my father dies at some time in the future then I will follow you. He was delaying his discipleship to Jesus. Jesus says let the dead bury the dead. Let the spiritually dead do what they can do because only those who have already come to faith in Jesus can proclaim the kingdom of God. There is an urgency to follow Jesus in this life. It is not something to be put off till later.

Ask

Lord, show me what it costs to follow you. Show me the beauty of a life that walks with you wherever you will lead.

        1) What is hindering me from following Jesus right now?
        2) What does the cost of following Jesus look like for me in this season of life?
        3) What am I afraid to give up in order to follow Jesus?

Lord, through the power of you speaking you bring life out of nothing, I saw that at creation. I plead with you now to do it again. Speak life into my heart. Revive the areas that are dead and do not stop there. Speak life over this city and the people in it. Revive our weary and cold hearts to shine forth your glory.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, fill me with your Spirit that I may obey you. You are God and I am not. Let my life show that I am your disciple. Give me the courage to follow you even when it is difficult.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 6:33:

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

      Matthew 6:33

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
