Personal Worship

The long-awaited finale of Jairus and his daughter.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Jesus, I come into your presence as one who is weary and heavy-burdened and I am looking for rest. The yoke of this world is too heavy for me to carry. Teach me and show me your humble and gentle heart at this time. Let me find the rest that my soul is looking for. Give me your yoke that is easy and your burden that is light.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 107:

1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
till they reached a city to dwell in.
8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

      Psalm 107:1-9

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Luke 8:51-56, where we read:

51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

      Luke 8:51-56

Jesus finally arrives. I’m sure Jairus’ wife and the crowd scoffed at his arrival. It seems that Jesus was just a little bit too late for this little girl. He kicks everyone out and hits them with the hard saying on the way out that, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” And they respond in laughter and Jesus presses on. He takes her by the hand and simply calls her to arise. And instantly her spirit returned to her and she got up at once. Her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one.

So what did Jesus mean she is only asleep and what does this hard saying mean for us? We have to bear in mind that this girl’s resuscitation was only temporary. That one day she will die again. Even after this happy reunion, they would be parted by death again one day. The real hope then in this life is that there will be a day when death is no more and that our bodies are raised into the everlasting presence of God. The question is do we believe and trust God in that? Part of the purpose of this miracle was to prove this to us. What happened to Jairus’ daughter is what happens to every believer in Jesus. As soon as we die, our souls immediately enter into the presence of Christ. Meanwhile, our bodies rest in the ground, waiting for the final resurrection. A resurrection that is so certain that the Bible describes it oftentimes as a kind of sleep. “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Thessalonians 4:14) Death is not the end for those who believe in Jesus. Just like Christ was raised on the third day, we too will be raised one day. We know this by faith. By faith in Jesus, our future is certain we need to not even fear death itself. We live this life with the hope that this world cannot duplicate. We live like those who know that the world is not all that God has for us.

Ask

Jesus, I praise you that you are the God who was resurrected and that I too will be with you in glory today. Give me a vision for what it looks like not just to believe these truths, but to live like I do.

  1. Do I have hope that I will be with Jesus in eternity?
  2. How does that hope change how I live now?

Lord, we join with the psalmists as we pray for revival (Psalm 85:4-9):

4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation toward us!
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6 Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.
8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Jesus, give me hope that this life is not all there is for me. Let that future change the way I live today. Break me of my fears and the idols of this life. Let me put my hope and my trust in you and in you alone.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8:11:

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

      Romans 8:11

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
