Personal Worship

Today we will look at the impact to our hearts of what we take in through the eyes.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Father, we set aside these three weeks as a time of prayer and fasting, that we might humble ourselves before you and seek from you: a safe journey for ourselves, our children, all our possessions, and for the world around us. You are our mighty God who holds all of us in your hands! (Based on Ezra 8:21)

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 103:

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

       Psalm 103:2-5

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in 2 Samuel, where we read:

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house.

       2 Samuel 11:2-4

There is a pattern of tragedy in the Bible that always begins with the eyes. Genesis 3:6 lays out the events that led to the fall of man: “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.” We see the same pattern in the verses above, which lay out the events leading to the adultery of David with Bathsheba. But we know the tragedy didn’t end there. As mentioned yesterday, David had Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, murdered to cover up his sin. In addition, the consequences to David’s family were great, as the “sword” never departed from David’s house. (2 Samuel 12:10)

In both cases (Eve and David), the eyes of these people were not the problem. The problem is what their hearts did with what their eyes saw. In both instances (and in others in the Bible), it was the sinful desire (the wanting of something that God had forbidden) born out of that seeing (acted upon and not quenched), that ended in tragedy.

An unprepared heart is vulnerable to the schemes of the enemy and to the pull of our own flesh. With the whole world available to us at a moment’s notice through our technology, we are at great risk and must actively guard our eyes and hearts to ensure that we’re not led down the same path of tragedy. And, if this is such a temptation to us, then how can we expect our children to deal with this danger?

But maybe you have already gotten caught in an addiction of some sort and feel helpless to free yourself. Praise be to the Lord, the power of sin was defeated through Jesus’ death and resurrection! His power is available to you and he is faithful to forgive, redeem and restore! If this is you, please reach out to a pastor for help. You are not alone.

Ask

In this season of PrayFirst, we ask the Lord to help us personally and corporately:

Personal:

Ask the Lord if you are opening yourself to temptation in some way. Ask him to show you if there is anything of this world that you’re allowing (or have allowed) into your heart (through your eyes) that is taking you (or might ultimately take you) down this biblical pattern of tragedy. If there is something (perhaps an addiction?), humbly repent, ask the Lord to change your desires and to show you that his power is sufficient for you in this battle!

Corporate:

Pray for Rio Vista Church and our sisters churches in this county and around the world, that God would stir in our hearts to passionately pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace and therefore be ready for whatever good work God would put before us. That we would be a mighty force for good in the darkness around us.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Father, I am struck again by the quick downfall of such a godly man (David). In my arrogance, have I considered myself immune to this kind of failure? Help me now to lay down anything that I may have considered “freedoms” that ultimately weaken my heart.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 1 Corinthians:

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

       1 Corinthians 10:13

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
