Personal Worship
Today we will explore how to have a heart of peace in a chaotic world.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Father, we set aside these three weeks as a time of prayer and fasting, that we might humble ourselves before you and seek from you: a safe journey for ourselves, our children, all our possessions, and for the world around us. You are our mighty God who holds all of us in your hands! (Based on Ezra 8:21)
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 46:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Psalm 46:1-7
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in John 16 where we read:
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
With our technology in hand, we are instantly aware of natural disasters, economic crises, political divisions, distant wars and rumors of wars, etc, all over the world. Each story seeks to ignite enough fear in us to hold us to the screen. How do we navigate all of this chaos and also maintain the heart of peace and joy that Christ died to give us?
Our verse today reminds us that we are children of the conqueror! Christ’s victory is the Christian’s triumph! Jesus overcame the Prince of this world, disarmed him, cast him out, and continues to crush him under our feet. His day (the last day) is set. His doom is sealed. Jesus has also won our victory over sin and death and will put both down together forever on that final day. He defeated the evil of this world by allowing it to defeat him on the cross and then triumphing over it in resurrection power. And now he lives in us and has given us his power to overcome the world, as he did!
So what does that mean for us as we mourn all that is crumbling around us and as we, ourselves, experience trouble? Faith in Jesus is the source of our victory; the means, the spiritual armor by which we overcome! He is still in control. We do not have to be afraid. His purposes are still good (and redemptive) for those who know him. As we keep our eyes on him and trust in his purposes, we can put to death the desires of the world, defeat the sin we are tempted by, and stand firm in the trials that come our way. And we get to join him in the fight against the darkness of it all, in his name and by his power! In spite of all that we have been blessed with here, we will never be satisfied in this world, because our hope and satisfaction is in Christ, and our future is secure, in heaven!
In this season of PrayFirst, we ask the Lord to help us personally and corporately:
Personal:
Ask the Lord to reveal your heart to you. Have the troubles of the world unsettled it? Can you rest in the fact that Jesus is the conqueror and that he is ruling over all of the issues in your life and in the world around you? Ask him for the faith necessary to step into this role of “overcomer” and to trust him with the plan. Pray for wisdom necessary to engage in the daily fight!
Corporate:
Pray for our President, the Congress, and the judicial system in the United States. Pray also for our local leaders. Pray for salvation and wisdom and for them to pursue their duties with integrity and for the good of all of the people. Pray that Christians in any of these positions would be filled with the Spirit and bear much fruit for the Kingdom.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
Yielding Prayer
Gracious Lord, help me to remember that the power of Almighty God resides in me! Show me the ways that I’ve listened to the lies of the devil that leave me feeling helpless in certain situations and sometimes in life in general. Dear Jesus, teach me to have faith that the One who is in me is so much greater than he who is in this world. Forgive me for my lack of faith and help me to walk forward in victory today!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 1 John:
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
1 John 4:4-5
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
