Personal Worship

We meet with Jesus in the wilderness and see how he fends off the temptations of Satan.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into your presence today I desire you to speak because your servant is listening.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 113:2-3:

Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!

          Psalm 113:2-3

As I read the passage, I am asking the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to me.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

       Matthew 4:1-11

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

       Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus right before he enters into his public ministry where he will teach and do miraculous things is led out into the desert by the Holy Spirit. He enters into silence and solitude and after 40 days and nights of fasting, Satan enters to tempt him. Three times Satan tries to tempt Jesus to do wrong and each time Jesus responds with Scripture. He uses the Scriptures to fight against temptation. It is easy in our modern and materialistic world to forget that there is a spiritual battle always raging around. That there is a real enemy who seeks to destroy us. And we need not fear that because the power of the Lord is far greater. God has given us a great and beautiful gift to combat the lies and the temptations of the evil one. When Satan comes to us with doubts we can remind ourselves of the promises of Scripture. When Satan comes to us with lies we can remind ourselves of the truth of Scripture. When Satan comes to us with temptations we can be strengthened by the Word of God. Jesus shows us the power of knowing, memorizing, and using Scripture to fight the spiritual battle that we are in.

Ask

Lord, give me the desire to know, memorize, and use the Scriptures. I ask that you would protect me from the evil one today. Show me what you are saying to me.

  1. What do I see? Hear? Smell? Taste? Feel as I enter into this story?
  2. What do I learn about who Jesus is?
  3. Where do I need to use Scripture to combat the lies and temptations of Satan right now?

Let’s pray. O God, O God, you know, the world is spinning on. Time is getting less and running out. Children are becoming youth, and youth becoming middle-aged, and middle-aged are getting old and dying. And you have said redeem the time for the days are evil. Lord, please don’t let us fail here. Lord, you do want us to be revived again. You do want to revive your people, Lord, individual people. And then, if the number of individual people can band together, then the church has been revived. God, revive your people. Grant, Lord, to help.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

Yielding Prayer

Lord, the evil one is seeking to destroy me. I ask for your protection. Keep me far from evil and temptation. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may use Scripture to fight back against the devil and his ways. I desire to yield to all that you have for me and Satan is an obstacle to that. Let me value and cherish your Scriptures today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 40:8:

The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.

       Isaiah 40:8

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
