Personal Worship

Today we look at the truth that the Sabbath is a command, not just a lifestyle.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into your presence I remind myself unless you build the house the builder labors in vain. Unless you watch over the city the watchman stays awake in vain. So, Lord, I invite your Spirit to meet me here now, because without you this time is in vain.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 135:

Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.
For the Lord will vindicate his people
and have compassion on his servants.

          Psalm 135:13-14

As I read the passage, I am asking the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to me.

And God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

       Exodus 20:1-17

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

       Exodus 20:1-17

At Mount Sinai God gives Moses the 10 commandments to give to the people. He begins with the reminder about what he has done for them and then he gives them the commandments for their lives. The first three all have to do with our relationship with God. The last six all have to do with our relationships with those around us. The fourth commandment and the most overlooked in our modern times is the commandment for the Sabbath. It is the longest commandment and it is the lynchpin for the other nine. God starts it with the word remember. A word that reminds us of how easily the Sabbath is overlooked, but also a reminder to remember where they have come from. They have left slavery where there was no rest. They had a cruel taskmaster who only cared about their productivity. God is inviting them into something radically different. A day of radical equality among the people. Everyone including servants and animals gets to rest.

Think about how gracious it is that God made this a commandment not just a lifestyle suggestion. To people who are weary and overburdened the Lord of heaven and earth is coming to them and saying you need to stop striving and rest. It is not something he has just decided due to their slavery, but it is something that they have needed since creation and have been not allowed to have for close to 400 years. It is not a burden it is a gift.

Ask

Lord, I ask you that you teach me what it looks like to remember the Sabbath. I ask that you allow me to be honest about my humanness today as I think about the Sabbath.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage? Is it something different than normal?
  2. Why did God make the Sabbath a commandment and not just a suggestion?
  3. How do I think the people of Israel would have heard it in their time?
  4. What is the role of the Sabbath in my life currently?

Lord, you have called us by name and because of that we humble ourselves, we pray, we seek your face, and we turn from our wicked ways. Will you hear us from heaven? Will you forgive our sins? And will you heal our land?

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I yield to the fact that the Sabbath is not a lifestyle suggestion, but it is a commandment. You are not suggesting my need for rest you are essentially requiring it. Fill me with your Spirit and show me how this applies to my life.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 11:28-30:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

       Matthew 11:28-30

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
