Personal Worship

We come to 2 Peter today and are reminded that as we wait for the Lord we are to pursue holiness in this life.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you tell us that you are good to those who wait for you and those whose soul seeks you. That is my desire today. I am waiting in your presence as my soul seeks you. Meet me in this place now.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 6:

Turn, O Lord, deliver my life;
save me for the sake of your steadfast love.
For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who will give you praise?

      Psalm 6:4-5

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation,

      2 Peter 3:8-15a

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation,

      2 Peter 3:8-15a

This passage reminds us about who God is and what he has for us. We serve a God who is patient and generous with his people. He has a beautiful future for us when he returns. So what do we do in the meantime? We are diligent in pursuing holiness in this life. We are diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. What a beautiful call on our lives. We don’t pursue holiness to be loved by God, but it is a get-to-do because we have already received his love in our lives. We don’t do this alone, but we need the power of the Holy Spirit to create in us holiness in this life. The Holy Spirit convicts us and breaks the chains of sin and bondage in our lives.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you would fill me with your Spirit that I may be found by you without spot or blemish, and at peace!

  1. What does this passage teach me about who God is?
  2. Do I long for the Lord to return again? In what ways do I and in what ways don’t I?
  3. Where do I need to be diligent in pursuing holiness in my life?
  4. Where do I need to ask the Holy Spirit for help?

Lord, in this season of waiting I ask that you would move supernaturally in this world. For a season of time send your Holy Spirit to this world in a supernatural way. Let those who are lost be found and those who are dead be made alive. Move powerfully and let all of the glory belong to you.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation,

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you have called me to great things in this life and you have not left me alone to achieve this because you are so good to me. I want to be holy like you are holy. Renew my desire today to seek after holiness and meet me with your Spirit that I may obey you above all else.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

     John 16:33

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
