Personal Worship

Today we will be looking at some of the things that happen when we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Our Jesus, on Christmas we celebrated your first Advent (or “arrival”) into our dark and helpless world as Immanuel, God with us. We now want to thank you for not leaving us as orphans after your death, burial, resurrection and then return to Heaven. For, after that return, you sent us the promised Holy Spirit; the Spirit of truth, our helper. Enable us over these next few weeks to better understand how you desire to live and reign within us through the Holy Spirit. Let us hear your voice and experience your very real presence as we meet with you now. And then, by your Spirit, lead us through this day! (Based on John 14:16-18)

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 63:

“O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.  I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!  I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.”

      Psalm 63:1-8 NLT

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

      Acts 1:8

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.”

       Joel 2:28

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.”

        Acts 2:42-45

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

        Romans 8:13

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

        Romans 8:13

The Holy Spirit brings great blessings to the life of a Christian. In the coming weeks, we will explore the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit, but today, we explore some of the other blessings identified with the “filling” of the Spirit.

Power for Service: In Acts 1:8, Jesus specifically tells the disciples that when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, they will receive the  power necessary to be his “witnesses.” In fact, so necessary is that power to our “witness,” that they were told to wait for it before they went out to witness. Over the past few days, we have also watched that powerful filling of the Spirit transform Peter from someone who was timid into someone who was bold and courageous, and into whose bold words carried the supernatural weight to save. Later, we see his confidence in the power to heal in Jesus’ name and how he credits Jesus with that healing in “witness” to him. (Acts 3:3-16)

Hearing God’s Voice: Joel 2:28 tells us of the direct link between the pouring out of God’s Spirit and, in that instance, the gift of prophecy. We will talk about the gift of prophecy next week, but prophecy at its core is “a message from God.” It must be compared with (and found consistent with) the scriptures, but the point is that God supernaturally speaks by the Holy Spirit. We see many incidences of this in the book of Acts. For example, the Spirit tells Philip to, “Go up and join this chariot” in Acts 8:29, and Peter is told to go to Caesarea with three men who came to him from the household of Cornelius in Acts 10:19-20; 11:12. Bottom line: Spirit-filled people are better able to hear the voice of Jesus in and through all of the different ways that he may decide to speak (which, again, must all be tried against and found consistent with the teachings of the Bible).

Love and Unity of the Church: Acts 2:42-45 gives us a picture of a Spirit-filled community. Their devotions, experiences and traits. Adding to that, Romans 5:5 tells us that our hope in Jesus “…does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” When the Spirit comes in fullness, we experience God’s love for us in a way that then naturally and irresistibly flows to others in selfless love, service and generosity.

Power for Purity and Obedience: Romans 8:13 tells us that it is only through the power of the Spirit that we can put to death the deeds of the flesh. When the Holy Spirit comes in power, he will sometimes instantly take away some sinful desire of ours. We see an example of this in the lives of the disciples who went from arguing at Jesus’ last supper over who would be the greatest among them, to people who were happy to be the “least” here on earth, selflessly serving others and subordinating themselves and their interests to those of others. Other times, the Spirit works more slowly to empower us to put our sin to death. But, in either case, he alone brings the victory! And, in either case, we need his filling!

So, let us chase after his filling, that we, too, might be his witnesses and experience the many blessings of his fullness!

Ask

Gracious Father, this is my inheritance as your child! Have I ever experienced such things? Search my heart, Lord. How do I feel about these blessings? Is there anything in my life that I desire more than your filling? If so, then help me to see how much “more” you’re offering. Forgive me and show me how, being filled with you, will satisfy me more than the “richest feast” this world has to offer. (See Psalm 63 above)

Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

        Romans 8:13

Yielding Prayer

Francis Chan says that, “We will never know the power of God unless we risk it all for the gospel.” Lord, I recognize that I need your fullness and power for so many reasons. Enable me to let go of anything that stands between me and the fullness of your Spirit! Transform me for your glory!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 43:

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

       Isaiah 43:18-20

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
