Personal Worship

Today we will simply ask to be filled!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Our Jesus, on Christmas we celebrated your first Advent (or “arrival”) into our dark and helpless world as Immanuel, God with us. We now want to thank you for not leaving us as orphans after your death, burial, resurrection and then return to Heaven. For, after that return, you sent us the promised Holy Spirit; the Spirit of truth, our helper. Enable us over these next few weeks to better understand how you desire to live and reign within us through the Holy Spirit. Let us hear your voice and experience your very real presence as we meet with you now. And then, by your Spirit, lead us through this day! (Based on John 14:16-18)

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the faithfulness of God displayed in Jeremiah 29

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

      Jeremiah 29:12-13

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

      Luke 11:9-13

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

This is a promise from Jesus to us. He knows that, in order for us to manifest his presence and to live a life of holiness, joy and power, we must be filled with the Holy Spirit. And so, we’re told that the Spirit is a good gift (indeed, he is the superlative gift) that our good Father will not deny to those of his children who ask him for it.

But, we are not only to ask; we are also to seek and to knock. That is to say, we are to passionately (and consistently) pursue more and more of the Spirit. Martin Lloyd Jones wrote, “The (early Christian) fathers used this great term ‘pleading the promises.’ You never hear it now. Why? Because people do not really pray any longer. They send little telegrams to God…They know nothing about ‘wrestling’ with God and ‘pleading the promises.’” And this promise from Jesus is a promise to “plead” with God over! “Lord, fill me with the Holy Spirit!”

Now, you may ask: “How do I know if God has filled me? Should I expect some kind of experience or manifestation that I am consciously aware of?” That’s a fair question. In the Scriptures, we do, at times, see obvious and even visible manifestations of the Spirit of God coming upon his people. In Acts 19, for example, Paul asks the believers at Ephesus if they received the Holy Spirit when they believed, which would suggest, at least, that he thought they would objectively know the answer to that question at some level (perhaps through some kind of manifestation or experience, or through the manifestation of the Spirit’s many gifts). Millions of people around the world claim to have had tangible encounters with the Spirit, either at or subsequent to their conversion (or both), which have brought great blessings to their lives and empowered their witness for Jesus. Many others have not had these kinds of experiences; but, when they look back on their lives, can see continual growth in power and spiritual giftings. We must trust God to fill us however he decides to do so; but we must trust him to do so! We must step out in faith and expect him to fulfill his promise as we surrender, wait, pursue and “plead” this promise.

For, the reality is that we need to be filled with the Spirit of God. We have all seen the direction our world is going and nothing less than the fullness and power of God in his church will be able to come against the growing darkness. Let us go after our birthright with our whole hearts and believe that God will work in us as he did in the lives of the Christians that we read about in the book of Acts (and in the recorded accounts of his work which span the entirety of church history)!

Ask

If you are willing, pray this prayer:

Father, I ask today for the filling of your Holy Spirit as you promise in your word. I come before you believing that this gift is for me and that you desire to give it to me. Lord, I am guilty of not pursuing you as I should. I am often complacent, satisfied, unwilling to step out of my comfort zone, caught up in my own agenda and desires. Forgive me for these things and for anything else that may occupy space in my heart in this moment. Empty me, of me; and help me to surrender my whole heart to you. I want to go on the great adventure that you have for me! I want to experience what it means to live my life in the fullness of your Spirit! I trust that you will do this and I wait in expectation for your coming!

Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

      Luke 11:9-13

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I believe that you will order this blessing to break forth and be revealed in me. In faith, I offer you my praise and thanksgiving and I step out into this day expecting your power to help me in every circumstance! Thank you Jesus that you are a gracious, loving and miracle-working God!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Philippians 1:

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

       Philippians 1:6)

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
