Personal Worship
Today we will take a deeper dive into prophecy.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, I will proclaim your greatness! Exalted be your name! Picturing you now seated upon your throne, ruling over all, I am in awe! And I am humbled by the fact that you bend all the way down from there to listen to my prayers! Who am I, O Lord, that you are mindful of me? What am I that you care so deeply for me? Meet me in this time of prayer, my heavenly Father, and open my ears to your voice of love and faithfulness! (Based on Psalm 34, 8, and 116:2 NLT)
I choose to rejoice again, with all God’s people, in the promise of God (and ultimate fulfillment in Acts 2) that I find in Joel 2:
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.”
Joel 2:28-29
As you read the passage below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
John 16:13-14
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
John 16:13-14
In our passage today, Jesus tells us that, as Spirit-filled believers, the Holy Spirit in us will communicate with us, guiding us, speaking to us and even revealing things to us that are yet to come. On Wednesday of last week, we looked at several of the blessings associated with the filling of the Holy Spirit, one of which was hearing God’s voice. We saw how the Spirit, in many different incidents in the book of Acts, directed the people to do God’s will. The Holy Spirit still speaks to us today, both through the Scriptures and in many other ways (all of which, as we said last week, need to be tested by the Scriptures, which is the ultimate authority, filter and safeguard for all such communications). Wayne Grudem, in his Systematic Theology, defines the gift of prophecy as a message from God, that we then tell others. So, aside from the direction we were given yesterday on how to pursue Spiritual gifts, what does pursuing prophecy (which is the gift that Paul told us to most earnestly desire) look like in our lives?
For starters, if we are going to receive a word from the Lord, we must first believe that God speaks. We must come to him in simple faith and, in prayer, seek to listen and learn how to hear the promptings of the Spirit. As we learn to better understand how God speaks to us, we may need to take some risks to humbly test what we believe he is saying. For example, if the Lord lays a person on your heart who may be in need of encouragement or prayer, instead of wondering, “is that God or is that me?,” just reach out to that person and tell them you felt as if God may have brought them to mind for you and then pass on whatever encouraging words or thoughts you felt led to share. Don’t claim to speak in the name of the Lord! Just let them know that they were on your mind and then share with them what you feel led to share. Their response typically reveals if it was truly God who led you to do this. And that is encouraging to both of you!
As you grow in this gift, there are a few helpful things to remember. Humility is key! As indicated above, you want to avoid throwing out phrases like “God told me to tell you…” and instead, humbly share the word and possibly ask something like, “Does that mean anything to you?” Also, as we learned yesterday, love for the Lord and for our brother or sister must be our motivation and a desire to build them up, or encourage, or console them must be our goal. And lastly, if someone gives you a word, and you are able, do not blindly accept it, but always test it. 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 tells us “not to not despise prophecies but to test everything; hold fast to what is good.” Since Paul had to warn against despising prophecies, it is likely that the church in Thessalonica was struggling with some aspect of the practice of it! However, as John Wimber once said, “The answer to abuse is not disuse; it is right use.”
I have been given prophecies for my family and for our church that I cannot test other than by simply waiting to see if they come to pass. But, in the meantime, they have encouraged me and helped me persevere when things have been difficult. Perhaps these types of prophecies are the reason that Paul specifically encouraged us to seek the gift!
Father, as I come to you with the gift of prophecy in mind, my first question is whether or not my prayer life looks like the prayer life of someone who believes God still speaks? Do I seek, in specific ways, to be still and to practice listening? To be led in the direction you want me to go? Show me now Lord what I can change in my life to make more time for you and to grow in hearing your voice.
Have I felt you prompting me to do something for or to say something to someone? Have I followed through or chosen not to risk embarrassment or failure? Lord, forgive me for any sin in my treatment of this gift or in my attitude toward it in the past and give me courage to pursue it for the great blessing it is to me and to the church!
Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
John 16:13-14
Yielding Prayer
Jesus, I pray that you will help me see and surrender to the beauty and simplicity of this gift. And that you’ll give me the courage necessary to humbly share the things that I believe that you’re laying on my heart for others. Words that build up, encourage or console others. Lord, build in me an earnest desire for all of the gifts, and especially this one (1 Cor. 14:1), as your word directs, and then give me the desires of my heart (Ps. 37:4). Amen.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Jeremiah 33:
“Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it–the LORD is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
Jeremiah 33:2-3
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
