Personal Worship
Today we will look at recognizing our spiritual hunger and cultivating spiritual desire.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord God, we approach your throne in praise! You are our refuge and strength, our very present help in trouble. Let us find in you today “the streams of the Holy Spirit that make (us) glad!” Let us rejoice that, in you, we will not be moved! You are faithful to help us as morning dawns. (based on Psalm 46:1, 4-5)
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the presence and faithfulness of God, who says:
“Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Psalm 73:23-26
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.”
Psalm 63:1-8
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
In each of our souls, there is a restless longing, or “hole,” that was put there (on purpose) by God and that can only be filled by him. Those of us who have chosen to put our faith in Jesus realize, in that moment, that he was what we were longing for all along! But even after salvation, we can encounter feelings of emptiness and restless longing. Imagine this: you have finished dinner and cleaned the dishes and you now feel a little restless, a little unsatisfied, or unsettled…you just need a little something to ease the empty feeling. So, maybe you turn on the TV, or read the news, or get dessert, go cybershopping, or scroll instagram. None of these are wrong in and of themselves! Or, perhaps, you choose to run to sinful things to escape the emptiness, like pornography or excessive use of alcohol. But what if this longing you feel is actually the Lord inviting you to come find your rest in him? What if it is God triggering your heart’s longing so that he can satisfy and renew you in his presence? Often we misdiagnose our “hungers” and try to feed them with other solutions that only leave us feeling worse. These other solutions actually dull the true spiritual hunger for more of God in our souls.
In Psalm 63, David correctly diagnosed the thirst in his soul as a thirst for God and he leaned into that longing to have his thirst sated by the Lord. Most commentators believe that David wrote this Psalm in his wilderness years while running away from Saul who wanted him dead. In that season, David literally lived in a dry and thirsty land, a place of emptiness. However, he didn’t lament the material losses of his former life, like his family, or the life of pleasure and ease in the courts of the king that he had enjoyed. Rather, he recalls with longing the times of worship that he spent in the temple where he witnessed the power and glory of God. He meditates on the love and faithfulness of God, even in this hard place. He praises God, as he considers how the Lord’s hand has faithfully upheld him.
When we are in dry and empty places, let us recognize that God has brought us there so that we will reach for him to fill us, as opposed to someone or something else. God is always looking to increase our spiritual desire for more! He doesn’t want us to stop at just surviving, but to move on toward thriving! Meditating on what God has already done for you (a moment, perhaps, in which he showed himself to you in power and glory, or was faithful through some hard times) and praising him for those things (like David did) is a great way to jump back into the river of life! Picking up that study you signed up for, doing that devotion that you missed, reading the word; all of these can saturate dry ground with the water of his presence. We have almost endless options when it comes to encountering the Lord: Christian radio and Spotify playlists, concerts, books (there were 2 good ones recommended in yesterday’s Personal Worship), a million podcasts (Out of Water! Please listen to that!), PureFlix, etc. And we can also just walk outside in silence, focusing on Jesus and listening for his voice! These are all ways of getting in the river! And what about just hanging out with someone whose passion and love for the Lord you admire? Are the things you are doing in your spare moments filling you up or emptying you further?
Heavenly Father, how is my spiritual appetite? Where do my cravings lead me in my spare (and possibly restless or empty) moments? Many of my options are not sinful, but am I using them to fill a void that you’re calling me in those moments of emptiness to fill with you? Do I look at the spiritual options available to me as “should do’s” or “get to do’s?” Because there is a great difference! Sometimes I just feel worn out or too tired to try to engage with you. And, in those moments, other things feel easier. Would you show me ways to find you in those moments too? Help me to increase my hunger for you!
Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
Yielding Prayer
My God, help me understand the deep longings of my soul! Show me how you are truly what I crave! Forgive my unbelief and give me the courage to let go of the things that have replaced you. Let me experience this life of overflow!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 5:
“You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.”
Matthew 5:6 (MSG)
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
