Personal Worship

Today we see that the reward may be great, but the punishment is great as well.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your throne remind me that you are in my midst. You are the mighty one who will save who rejoices over me. You quiet me with your love and you exult over me with loud singing. Meet me now and let me hear from you.

*Adapted from Zephaniah 3:17

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the promises of God that I find in Psalm 18:

I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

      Psalm 18:1-2

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

       Luke 12:45-48

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Jesus’ story does not end well for the servant who decides to not stay dressed and alert for the return of his master. The rewards were great for those who obeyed and the punishment was great for those who decided to live the current day for themselves. The master sees the servant’s unfaithfulness and responds in a great manner. The last verse summarizes what Jesus is calling us to do. For those that have been given much which if you are reading this you are probably in this category, much will be required. Jesus has a purpose for us here on this earth, in this life, and he does not want us to waste it.

Ask

Lord, let me take this warning seriously. Show me where I have been given much and fill me with your Spirit to do much for your name and for your glory.

  1. What do I learn about Jesus from this passage?
  2. What servant am I being right now in this story?
  3. Why does the master react the way he does?
  4. Have I been given much? What am I doing with what I’ve been given?

Wake us up, Lord! Remind us to live aware, to redeem the time, to listen to your words, and to be willing to make a difference in the places you’ve called us to be. Thank you for your mighty power that acts on behalf of your children. Out of your kindness, please extend to us your grace and freedom. Cover us with your protection. Empower us with your strength. We ask for an awakening of your presence in our own lives and in the world around us, as never seen before. We pray for your help to be faithful to proclaim your name, and that all the enemy’s plans to silence the name of Jesus would be crushed.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you have given me so much. Let me yield in obedience to what you call me to do with all that you have given me. Protect me from Satan who desires to distract me from living for the Great and Final Day. Fill me with your Spirit and let me know you today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 6:23:

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

       Romans 6:23

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
