Personal Worship
We meet a man today who thought he had it all yet he walked away from Jesus very sad.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as the deer pants for water so my soul pants for you. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? In this moment God would you meet with me? I desire your presence so make your presence known to me. Let me experience your love and mercy as I approach your throne.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the promises of God that I find in Psalm 27:
Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they breathe out violence.
Psalm 27:11-12
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.”And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”
Luke 18:18-30
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
Luke 18:18-30
This man had it all, at least in his eyes he did. He believes he has kept all of the commandments. He had power and he had money, yet he couldn’t prioritize Jesus over all of that. St. Augustine describes sin as disordered love. Our God is a jealous God in the most beautiful way. He doesn’t just want some of our hearts, but he wants all of it.
Lord, I don’t just want you to be somewhere on the list of what I love, but I want you to be number one. Reveal to me now what is stopping that.
Lord, do what you have done before. Let me see what you have done in history with my own eyes. Bring revival to this nation again. Meet us with a time of supernatural blessing through your Holy Spirit. Make hearts that are dead again alive in the promise of your gospel. Let us see your glory because it is all we are clinging to.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Luke 18:18-30
Yielding Prayer
Lord, let my life not be like that of this young man. Break me of all of the things that I have placed above you. Reveal to me the idols of my heart. Let my life be one that seeks to prioritize you above all else and when I fail at that let me be quick to repent and experience the love you have for me.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 6:33:
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
