Personal Worship
We come to Abraham today and the covenant that God enters into with him.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, I long to know you deeper. Meet me in this desire. Reveal yourself to me that I may know you deeply. I want to experience all that you are willing to offer me. Speak to me through your Word and your Spirit now.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in 1 Chronicles 16 …
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

This is a rather wild scene in our eyes, but a shockingly common one in ancient times. When two parties were entering into a covenant with one another they would enact this ritual. They would kill and halve an animal of some kind. Then both parties would walk down the middle. By doing that they are claiming that if they break the covenant their lives should end up like the dead animals. Pretty serious. The fascinating part of this is that only God walks through the middle and Abraham does not. God is saying that on his action alone Abraham will receive all that God has promised him. It’s really beautiful.
God, I ask that you let me see your beauty. You are the God who not only keeps your promises but there is nothing that can stop you from accomplishing them.
Lord, begin by reviving my own heart this week. Meet with me and show me where I am in sin or holding a part of my life back from you. Fill me with your Spirit and give me abundant life in you. I am desperate for a move of your Spirit this week.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, you are the God who acts on my behalf. Let me learn to trust you wheverver you will lead me. Give me eyes of faith that even when the obstacles seem too great you are the God who goes with me to accomplish all that you have promised.

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Corinthians 5…
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
