Personal Worship

The serpent enters into the Garden of Eden and sin enters into the world.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, your Word promises that you give more grace. I ask for more grace today.  Let my broken heart receive more grace for my sins. In a world full of comparison let my doubtful heart experience more grace. Let my fearful heart receive more grace and fill me with your strength. Let me see your face today. Speak to me now as I listen for what you have for me.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 113…

 Praise the Lord!
Yes, give praise, O servants of the Lord.
Praise the name of the Lord!
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    now and forever.
Everywhere—from east to west—
praise the name of the Lord.
For the Lord is high above the nations;
his glory is higher than the heavens.
Who can be compared with the Lord our God,
    who is enthroned on high?
He stoops to look down
    on heaven and on earth.
He lifts the poor from the dust
and the needy from the garbage dump.
He sets them among princes,
even the princes of his own people!
He gives the childless woman a family,
    making her a happy mother.
Praise the Lord!

     Psalm 113

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

       Genesis 3:1-7

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Satan enters into the perfection of the Garden Eden seeking to destroy. Satan has the same playbook today as he did back at the Fall. His main temptation has always been and will always be trying to convince humanity that they can be God for themselves. Sadly, it worked on Eve back then and is wreaking havoc on our world today. Eve knew what God had said even after Satan had distorted it. In the end, what caused her to fall into disobedience? It was her eyes. She saw that the tree was good for food and she saw that it was a delight to the eyes. Because of what she saw she disobeyed God and sin entered into all of humanity.

Ask

Lord, I ask for humility today. As I meditate and pray through the fall of man would you show me what you have for me today?

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What does the desire to be God for ourselves look like in our culture today?
  3. How am I tempted to disobey God by what my eyes see as good and desirable?
  4. Where do I see sin in the world? In our country? In our city? In my own life?
  5. Where do I need to repent of my sin today?

I pray for the people of Rio, Lord, that we would be filled with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of you, fully pleasing to you. Is there a way I am seeking to grow in this knowledge of you? Show me now if you would have me seek after you in some way, that I might bear good fruit…

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, let me not write this passage off and just use it to point fingers. Show me what you are inviting me into. You are a good God who loves his people and calls us to obedience. Transform my heart and create in me a life that follows after you no matter what may seem desirable to my eyes.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Corinthians 5…

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

       2 Corinthians 5:21

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
