Personal Worship

This coming Sunday begins the Advent season. Advent means “arrival” and signifies the start of an event or the arrival of a person. In Christian communities around the world, Advent refers to a four-week season of remembering and celebrating the arrival of Jesus on Earth. It’s a time to reflect on the unexpected nature of Jesus’ humble birth and join in the anticipation of when he will come again to reunite Heaven and Earth once and for all. Our focus this Advent is on the nature and character of the love of God. Over the course of Advent, we want to experience God’s continual invitation to surrender to his love.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into Advent let me experience the anticipation and the desire of God entering into humanity. You are the Creator who enters into his creation. You are the Author of Life that steps onto the page. Let me experience the invitation to surrender to a love that does that for me.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Zephaniah 3…

The Lord your God is in your midst,
    a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.

       Zephaniah 3:17

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

       John 3:1-8

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       John 3:1-8

As Jesus’ ministry began, the Pharisees who were the religious elites had problems with him. Not minor problems, but major ones, because Jesus was claiming to be God and doing things that only God could do and they did not like or believe that. Nicodemus, a member of that group, seems to have gotten curious to a point of wanting to meet with Jesus. Trying not to let everyone know about it he meets him at night. Jesus throws him for a loop with the idea that he must be born again. That Jesus came to bring new life and spiritually all of his children are born again.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you give me a curiosity and a clarity on who you are.

  1. What did Nicodemus have to lose because of this meeting? What did he have to gain?
  2. How would I explain being “born again” to someone?
  3. Have I been born again? Where do I see it in my life?

Lord, the Incarnation teaches me that there is no where you won’t go for the sake of your children. Come again by the power of your Holy Spirit this Advent season. Show us the darkness we are living in and bring light that casts out the darkness. Bring many to faith that are desperate to experience a love that only you can give.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

       John 3:1-8

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you meet with your people. In obedience you say that the life I live before knowing you doesn’t just need an upgrade, but it needs a rebirth. Show me my sins and bring to repentance so I can find freedom in you again.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 6…

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

       John 6:37

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
