Personal Worship

The world has been waiting thousands of years for this moment as Gabriel announces to Mary what will take place.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, would you be my Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace today? Let me experience your love through your Word and prayer today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 63…

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
    in your name I will lift up my hands.

       Psalm 63:1-4

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

       Luke 1:26-38

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       Luke 1:26-38

What a moment! This is the moment that the world has waited thousands of years for. God seeing the brokenness of humanity and our inability to save ourselves does what we cannot do. With all the beauty and joy that this scene provides it is easy to miss all of the fear that this could have produced in Mary. Imagine being a 14-year-old girl and receiving this news. That you have been chosen by God to be the earthly mother of his Son. Imagine the self-doubt that could overwhelm you. This is news that no one will believe, especially Joseph. Everyone in town will think that you cheated on your soon-to-be husband Joseph. You know that if they wanted to they could stone you for this. In the midst of all of this, Mary responds in faith. She will do whatever the Lord has for her.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you fill me with a trust in you like Mary had. That whatever you have planned for me that I will respond by being your servant through it all.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What would be going through my mind if I was Mary?
  3. What is the Lord calling me to right now that seems to be too much? How can I trust the Lord in the midst of that?

Heavenly Father, as we enter this season of Advent, we remember the hope you brought to the world through the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ. Stir our hearts with the same anticipation that awaited his coming, and awaken in us a deeper hunger for your presence. Revive us, O Lord, that we may shine your light in the darkness. As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s birth, renew our faith, restore our joy, and draw us closer to you. Let this season be a time of spiritual renewal, where we reflect your love to those around us. Come, Lord Jesus, and reign in our hearts anew. May the hope, peace, joy, and love of Advent transform us and lead us to walk in your ways.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are God and I am not. I ask today that your Spirit fills me with trust in you that obeys quickly to whatever you ask for me. Create in me the spirit of a servant and let that define my life.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 1…

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

       John 1:14

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
