Personal Worship

We begin the week with the Fall, but praise be to Jesus that we will end the week with redemption.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I cling to your invitation in Matthew 11 that says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” I seek a rest that only you can give today. Meet with me through your Word and prayer and fill me with your Holy Spirit.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Isaiah 7…

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

       Isaiah 7:14

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

       Genesis 3:1-7

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

The Fall is the tragedy we have all gotten used to due to living with its consequences. When Satan enters the picture, Adam and Eve are walking with God. They have all they need. They have dominion over everything and access to everything except the one tree—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Satan enters and contorts what God said. He is trying to get Eve to doubt that God is actually for her. He wants her to believe that God is a God who withholds instead of a God who gives. As soon as he does that, he has the opening for verse 5, which clarifies why we disobey God. We disobey God because we want to be God for ourselves. We believe he cannot meet our expectations, so we take the reins from him. The pattern of sin in all of our lives is seen here by looking at the verbs of Eve’s act of disobedience. She saw, delighted, desired, and took. That is how we all do it as well. We see that there is something that delights us more than God and what he offers us. We desire that thing above God, and we take it. By knowing Satan’s tactics and our pattern of sin, we can be on guard and search for them in our own lives.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you open my eyes and give me the courage to search out sin in my life. Let me understand that the only thing between my sin and your forgiveness is my confession of sin.

  1. How does Satan deceive Eve?
  2. Where do I see the sin pattern that Eve displayed in my own life?
  3. Where is Satan tempting me to doubt God today?
  4. Where am I in a pattern of sin, and will I ask for the Holy Spirit’s help?

Lord, I pray alongside King David today, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.”

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are a good, good Father who loves me as his child. Forgive me for all the ways I doubt, based on my circumstances in this life. Show me my sins and transgressions. Let me find my hope not in myself, but in the sinless Savior who was crucified.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Psalm 103…

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

       Psalm 103:11-12

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
