Judah’s wickedness continues.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Father, I come to you with a heart full of gratitude. Thank you for the blessings that remind me of your goodness. As I open your Word, increase my joy in you and teach me to delight in your truth. May my praise rise from a heart anchored in your presence.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Philippians 4…
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. And when Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,” she took off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” He answered, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And she said, “If you give me a pledge, until you send it—” He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him. Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood.
When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to take back the pledge from the woman’s hand, he did not find her. And he asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was at Enaim at the roadside?” And they said, “No cult prostitute has been here.” So he returned to Judah and said, “I have not found her. Also, the men of the place said, ‘No cult prostitute has been here.’” And Judah replied, “Let her keep the things as her own, or we shall be laughed at. You see, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.”
About three months later Judah was told, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has been immoral. Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.” And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.” As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.” And she said, “Please identify whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.” Then Judah identified them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her again.

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Scripture doesn’t feel like a soap opera often, but this chapter sure does. Tamar feels the only way she can have life is through trickery. Judah has a pattern of sin that is public, to the point where she knows that if she acts like a cult prostitute, Judah will sleep with her. It happens exactly as she plans. Judah’s hidden sin comes to life very publicly when all of it is brought to light. In the crucial moment, he repents. Wild story and weird to say, but it has a beautiful ending.
Lord, show me what you have for me today in the midst of this story. Where there is hidden sin, would you bring it to light? Let your kindness lead me to repentance today.

After the parable of the persistent widow, Jesus gives us these powerful words of encouragement to persevere. It can be difficult to pray lofty prayers for seemingly impossible things—like revival, hardened hearts, or difficult circumstances—for long periods of time, especially when we see no signs of movement.
Pray: My Father, I confess that the definition of “delay long” often feels very different to You than it does to me! Forgive me for so easily giving up when I don’t see instant results. Give me the strength to persevere, trusting that while I am praying, You are working all things together for a good and right outcome. May our faith, both individually and as a church, be a pleasing offering to You—a faith that trusts You hear and answer every prayer.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, meet with me now. Show me where there is sin in my own life and draw me back to you. Let me see the beauty of repentance today and how great your grace is for your children. Give me an obedience to your Word that outweighs all the opinions of this earth.

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
