Personal Worship

We enter into the courtroom of the Lord and are flies on the wall during a conversation between God and Satan.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into this time, I hold close the promise that you draw near to your children when we draw near to you. I am drawing near. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and speak to me through your Word and prayer.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 46…

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

       Psalm 46:1

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

      Job 1:6-12

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

      Job 1:6-12

One of the rare glances we get of the spiritual realm in the Bible. Satan enters with the Sons of God to have an audience with God. He tells us what he does. He goes to and fro on the earth and walks up and down on it. Immediately, God seems to offer up Job. What a review of Job by God. He is a blameless, upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. Satan, the ultimate distorter, tries to say that Job is only obedient because of his material blessings. God gives Satan permission to do what he will with Job, but he cannot touch Job himself. God is in control and gives permission to Satan.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me how you are in control of all things.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What do I learn about God from this passage?
  3. Why would God give Satan permission to do this?
  4. What do I learn about Satan from this passage?

Lord, break through the evil of this world. Defeat all the darkness and bring those who are clouded by Satan into freedom. To you belongs all power and glory forever and ever.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

      Job 1:6-12

Yielding Prayer

Lord, there is nothing that you are not in control of. Satan has to have your permission. I know that you are doing all things for my good and your glory. Help me to trust that today. Walk with me. Be all around me. Give me eyes to see what you are doing.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 11…

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

      Matthew 11:28-30

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
