Personal Worship

We turn to James!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into this time, I hold close the promise that you draw near to your children when we draw near to you. I am drawing near. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and speak to me through your Word and prayer.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Isaiah 26…

You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
    because he trusts in you.

       Isaiah 26:3

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

      James 4:1-10

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James confronts the root of conflict and spiritual unrest. We give ourselves to our desires instead of submitting to God. We want what the world has to offer. It is a sober warning, but filled with so much grace. If we humble ourselves and submit to God we will be exalted. Wonderful news that if we resist the devil he will flee from us!

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me where I am chasing after the desires of this world. Show me my pride and fill me with your Spirit that leads me to humility.

  1. What desires or attachments might be pulling my heart away from wholehearted devotion to God?
  2. How do pride or self-reliance show up in my daily decisions?
  3. What does it look like for me to actively submit my life to God right now?
  4. Where do I need to resist the devil?

Lord, break through the evil of this world. Defeat all the darkness and bring those who are clouded by Satan into freedom. To you belongs all power and glory forever and ever.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I submit to you today. Forgive me for all of the ways I chase after the things this world has to offer. Help me to resist the devil today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 11…

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

      Matthew 11:28-30

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
