Personal Worship
Today, we come to Jesus in Galilee and rejoice that the light of his kingdom shines into places of darkness.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, with so much uncertainty in this life, let me hold fast to your Word. I cling to the promise of Isaiah 55:11 that your Word never returns empty and always fulfills what it sets out to do. Meet with me at this time by the power of your Holy Spirit.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 27 …
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:12-17
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:12-17
After John is arrested, Jesus withdraws to Galilee and begins his public ministry. Matthew tells us this fulfills the promise from Isaiah: the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light. Jesus does not begin his ministry in the places people might expect, but in Galilee of the Gentiles, where darkness, sorrow, and spiritual need are real. His message is simple and urgent: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” The arrival of Jesus means light has broken into the darkness. Repentance is not merely feeling bad about sin; it is turning toward the King who has come near. Because Jesus brings the kingdom, we are invited to leave darkness and walk in his light.
Lord, I ask that you show me the beauty of repentance today. The holy God has provided a way to make things right. Draw me with your kindness and lead me to repentance.
Lord, revive me with the light of Christ. Shine into every hidden place in my heart. Bring repentance, hope, and renewed joy where darkness has settled.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Father, I yield the darkness in me to the light of Jesus. Lead me to true repentance, not just regret. Help me turn from sin and walk today as one who belongs to the kingdom of heaven.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 8…
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
