Personal Worship

Today we remember that our generosity begins with recognizing that everything we give to God was first given to us by God.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are the Good Father who hears your children and desires to draw near to them. I thank you for who you are. Meet with me now, fill me with your Spirit, and reveal to me what you want today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 116…

What shall I render to the Lord
for all his benefits to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.

       Psalm 116:12-14

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you.

       1 Chronicles 29:10-18

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       1 Chronicles 29:10-18

As David and the people give generously toward the temple, David refuses to take credit for their generosity. He recognizes that their wealth, strength, and ability to give all came from God in the first place. This changes the way we understand giving: we are not generously allowing God to have some of what belongs to us; we are returning to him a portion of what already belongs to him. Gratitude loosens our grip on possessions because we remember their source. The more clearly we see God as the giver, the more naturally generosity becomes our response.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me what an upright heart looks like as I follow after you.

  1. Do I regularly thank God for what he has entrusted to me?
  2. Do I think of my possessions as mine or as resources God has placed in my care?
  3. What has God given me that I can use for his purposes?
  4. How could gratitude make me more generous today?

Father, revive gratitude in my heart. Open my eyes to recognize your generosity toward me and keep me from believing that anything I possess exists apart from your grace.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yielding Prayer

Lord, all that I have comes from you. My time, abilities, resources, and possessions are yours. Help me faithfully return to you what you have placed in my hands and use everything you have given me for your glory.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 1…

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

      James 1:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
