Personal Worship

Today we are invited to see generosity not as an obligation to endure but as a joyful opportunity to participate in what God is doing.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are the Good Father who hears your children and desires to draw near to them. I thank you for who you are. Meet with me now, fill me with your Spirit, and reveal to me what you want today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 112…

 Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commandments!
His offspring will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
    he will be remembered forever.

       Psalm 112:1-6

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

      2 Corinthians 9:6-11

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

      2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Paul teaches that Christian generosity should come from a willing heart, not pressure or compulsion. God desires cheerful givers because generosity reflects something about his own character. He provides for us not simply so that we can accumulate more, but so that we can increasingly become people who bless others. As God provides what we need, he gives us opportunities to participate in his work through open hands. Generosity therefore becomes part of our discipleship; it teaches us to trust God’s provision while reflecting his grace to others.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you give me eyes to see and behold you in the midst of this conversation about the things of this earth.

  1. Is my giving characterized more by joy or obligation?
  2. What keeps me from being more generous?
  3. How has God provided for me in ways that allow me to bless others?
  4. Where might God be inviting me to give freely today?

Father, revive generosity within your people. Free us from greed and fear, and make us a people whose open hands show the world the abundance of your grace.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

      2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Yielding Prayer

Lord, make me a cheerful giver. Remove anything in my heart that causes me to give reluctantly or selfishly. Help me trust your provision and eagerly use what you have entrusted to me to bless others and advance your kingdom.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Lamentations 3…

 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

      Lamentations 3:22-23

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
