Personal Worship

Today, we fix our eyes on Jesus and ask God to form in us the same humility, selflessness, and love that we see perfectly displayed in Christ.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you have made me your child by the sacrifice of your only begotten Son. You know me by name and the hairs on my head. I ask that you pour out your favor on me and show me your glory as I listen for what you have to say to me today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 113…

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
Who is like the Lord our God,
    who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?

       Psalm 113:4-6

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

       Philippians 2:1-11

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Philippians 2 shows us that true humility is not weakness, but the willing choice to put others before ourselves. Jesus had every right to glory and honor, yet he humbled himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to death on a cross. Paul points to Jesus as the pattern for how we are meant to live with one another. Humility means letting go of selfish ambition, resisting the need to be noticed, and caring more about the good of others than protecting our own status. When our identity is secure in Christ, we no longer have to fight for recognition or prove our importance. The more closely we follow Jesus, the more his servant-hearted humility should shape the way we live.

Ask

Jesus, let me behold you today and what you have done on my behalf. Show me what humility looks like.

  1. Where am I most tempted to seek recognition or importance?
  2. Whose interests have I overlooked because I have focused on my own?
  3. Is there an area of my life where selfish ambition is influencing my decisions?
  4. How can I intentionally take the posture of a servant today?

Lord, revive your church by giving us the mind of Christ. Free us from selfish ambition, rivalry, and the desire to make much of ourselves. Form communities where we gladly serve one another, honor one another, and put others’ needs before our own. Make the humility of Jesus visible among us.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord Jesus, I yield my ambitions, my reputation, and my desire to be noticed to you. Give me your mind and your heart. Teach me to serve without needing recognition and to love others without asking what I will receive in return. Make me more like you today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 11…

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

      Matthew 11:28-30

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
