Personal Worship
Today, we consider the kind of leadership God desires among his people and remember that every one of us is called to clothe ourselves with humility toward one another.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, you have made me your child by the sacrifice of your only begotten Son. You know me by name and the hairs on my head. I ask that you pour out your favor on me and show me your glory as I listen for what you have to say to me today.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 23…
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Psalm 23:11-3
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:1-7
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
Peter calls church leaders to shepherd God’s people willingly, eagerly, and by example rather than through control or domination. At the center of his instruction is the reminder that Jesus is the Chief Shepherd, meaning every human leader ultimately cares for people who belong to him. That truth should produce humility because leadership is stewardship, not ownership. Peter then widens his instruction beyond leaders and tells everyone to clothe themselves with humility toward one another. Healthy churches are shaped not only by humble leaders, but by humble people who are willing to listen, serve, forgive, receive correction, and bear one another’s burdens. And when leadership or responsibility becomes heavy, Peter reminds us that we are not meant to carry it alone, because we can cast our anxieties on God, knowing that he cares for us.
Lord, give me love for the Body of Christ around me. Make me more like your image today.
Lord, revive your church by raising up humble shepherds and humble congregations. Give our leaders hearts that reflect Jesus, and give all of us a willingness to serve, listen, submit, forgive, and care for one another. Remind us that Christ alone is the Chief Shepherd of his church.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. Yielding Prayer
Lord, everything you have entrusted to me belongs ultimately to you. I yield my responsibilities, my influence, and the people I care for into your hands. Help me lead by example, walk in humility, and trust you with burdens I was never meant to carry alone.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Psalm 55…
Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
