Personal Worship

Today we remember that God created us for relationship, covenant commitment, and the deep belonging that comes from giving ourselves faithfully to one another.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are the God who created all things! You instituted the family, and sin often leads us into confusion about it. In this time, I ask that you speak to me through your Word by the power of your Holy Spirit. Quiet my heart so I can hear all that you have for me.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 128…

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
    who walks in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
    you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
    who fears the Lord.

       Psalm 128:1-4

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

       Genesis 2:18-25

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

       Genesis 2:18-25

God declares that it is not good for the man to be alone and provides a relationship unlike any other. Genesis describes marriage as a covenant in which a man and woman leave, hold fast to one another, and become one flesh. Biblical family is therefore shaped by more than affection or convenience; it is formed through covenant faithfulness. In a culture where relationships can easily become temporary or transactional, God calls us toward commitment, sacrifice, forgiveness, and belonging. Our families can become places where the steadfast love of God is displayed in ordinary life.

Ask

Lord, you are a relational God who made us in your image. Remind us that we are not meant to live this life on an island.

  1. Do I approach my closest relationships primarily through commitment or convenience?
  2. Where is God calling me to practice greater faithfulness?
  3. Is there someone in my family whom I need to forgive, encourage, or pursue?
  4. How can my relationships better reflect the covenant love of God?

Lord, revive marriages and families within your church. Restore faithfulness where there is distance, forgiveness where there is hurt, and sacrificial love where selfishness has taken root.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

       Genesis 2:18-25

Yielding Prayer

Father, teach me to love the people you have placed around me with patience, faithfulness, humility, and grace. Help me hold fast to what you have called me to.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Colossians 3…

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

      Colossians 3:12-14

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
