Personal Worship

Today, we recognize that following Jesus includes helping others encounter the forgiveness, freedom, and restoration that only he can provide.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your presence today, I ask that you meet with me in power. Remind me that you are the God who frees. The wind and the seas obey your voice; set me free from the chains that imprison me today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 40…

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

       Psalm 40:3

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

       Mark 2:1-12

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       Mark 2:1-12

When four men discovered that the crowd prevented them from bringing their paralyzed friend to Jesus, they refused to let the obstacle stop them. Their determination led them to lower their friend through the roof, placing him directly before the one who possessed the power to restore him. Jesus first announced the forgiveness of the man’s sins and then healed his body, demonstrating his divine authority to meet humanity’s deepest need. This encounter reminds us that people need far more than temporary relief from their circumstances; they ultimately need reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ. Yet the compassion and persistence of these friends also challenge us to actively help others encounter our Savior’s restoring love. As the church, we are called to proclaim forgiveness, serve those who are hurting, and faithfully carry one another’s burdens to Jesus.

Ask

Lord, create in me a heart that brings those around me to your feet, no matter the obstacles that are in my way.

  1. Who in my life needs someone to faithfully bring them before Jesus in prayer?
  2. What obstacles have discouraged me from helping others encounter Christ?
  3. Am I concerned with both the spiritual and practical needs of those around me?
  4. How can I participate more intentionally in Jesus’ restoring mission through my church?

Lord, revive our churches with a burden for those who are hurting and far from you. Give us faith that overcomes obstacles, compassion that moves us to action, and a renewed desire to see people experience your forgiveness and restoring power.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Yielding Prayer

Jesus, I surrender my comfort and my willingness to stay uninvolved in others’ needs. Open my eyes to those around me, and give me the faith and compassion to faithfully bring them before you.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Hebrews 4…

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

       Hebrews 4:16

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
