Personal Worship

We seek what we can learn from Paul today.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are so gracious to me. Thank you that you are God over all things, and I can trust you. As I enter this time, fill me with your Spirit. Let me hear from you through the power of your Word.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 23…

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

       Psalm 23:4

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

      1 Corinthians 10:14-22

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Paul calls us to a decisive break from idolatry, not merely as a rule to follow but as a matter of loyalty and love. He reminds the church that participation in the Lord’s Supper is a declaration of shared life with Christ—union with his body and his sacrifice. Because of this, believers cannot casually participate in practices that align them with spiritual powers opposed to God. Idolatry is not only about statues or temples; it is about divided allegiance. Paul makes clear that spiritual participation matters deeply—what we give ourselves to shapes us. God desires his people to live with undivided hearts, fully devoted to him, not flirting with rival loyalties that dull our faith and provoke spiritual compromise.

Ask

Lord, show me where my allegiance to you is divided. Fill me with your Spirit and show me the beauty of being devoted to you alone!

  1. What modern forms of idolatry subtly compete for my devotion and loyalty to Christ?
  2. How does my participation in the Lord’s Supper shape the way I view my daily choices and commitments?
  3. In what areas of my life might I be attempting to hold divided allegiances?
  4. What would wholehearted devotion to God look like in my habits, relationships, and worship?

Revive us, Lord! Break down the chains of the oppressor. Release us from all the dominions and powers of this world. Set your people free and let us walk in that freedom and not run back to slavery.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Faithful God, you alone are worthy of my worship and devotion. I confess that I sometimes allow other loves, comforts, or desires to share the place that belongs to you alone. Forgive me for divided loyalties and quiet compromises. I renounce every false altar in my heart and yield myself fully to you. Help me to live in a way that honors my union with Christ, walking in faithfulness and obedience. Strengthen me by your Spirit to choose you daily, above all else.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 4…

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

      James 4:8-10

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
