Personal Worship

Paul ends 1 Corinthians 13 by bringing us back to a discussion on the spiritual gifts and their purpose.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I come to you now, would you give me a deep desire to commune with you during this time? Grant me an inexplicable delight in your Scripture this morning. Give me trust in your goodness that allows me to enter into prayer openly and honestly. I trust that you will meet me in this place.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 47:

God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
    he is highly exalted!

       Psalm 47:8-9

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in 1 Corinthians 13, where we read:

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

      1 Corinthians 13:8-13

It seems that love never ends fits with what we looked at yesterday, but it begins a new section as Paul returns to the gifts. Paul is reminding us of the unfailing nature of love, that love will continue throughout eternity. In fact, perfect love will be realized (finally!) when Jesus returns. He puts the gifts specifically the power gifts in their place. He’s saying these gifts will end when perfection comes. They were never meant to continue into eternity. The gifts are meant for building up the church in this present age. He uses the illustration of a mirror, which would have been easily understood by the Corinthians who were known for their production of bronze mirrors in antiquity. In this present age, we see dimly, this is not what it is meant to be. We have been saved, but we are still living in a sinful and broken world. The hope is that it won’t last forever. Jesus will return and when he does we will see clearly face-to-face with him. We know in part, Jesus has given us that ability, but we do not know fully. Here’s the beautiful part, we will know him fully just like he knows us fully. In the same way, we are fully known and fully loved by God, we will know him in that way!

Paul ends with the beautiful triad of faith, hope, and love abiding, but again he reminds us that love is the greatest. Love fills us when hope and faith when we walk in it.

Ask

Jesus, I ask that you would show me what it looks like to live for the day of perfection. The day when you will return and wipe away every tear. The day when every bad thing will become untrue. For now, show me what it looks like to live in a mirror that is dimly lit.

1)What does it mean for me to see in a mirror dimly?
2)How is Paul putting the gifts into perspective for me today?
3)Am I longing for the day of perfection?
4)How beautiful will it be to know fully just like we have been fully known? What does that make me feel at this moment?

Lord, pour out your Spirit mightily on our city. Give us your Spirit that convicts your people of where we are walking in darkness. Draw us back into your light through repentance and let us pursue the holiness that you have called us to. In that process give us a manifestation of your Spirit that our city has never seen before in all of its history. Draw multitudes to salvation and let your glory be seen in our streets.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Jesus, give me a longing and a desire that this world cannot satisfy. Remind me in my day-to-day that this is not all that I am living for. Give me the confidence to be ready for when you return. Make me alert. Let me live this life in anticipation of the day when I will fully know you. I yield to that perspective that allows me to be given and to use these gifts in this life to build up your Church and your people.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 1 Corinthians 13:7:

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

         1 Corinthians 13:7

Closing Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me with love. Fill me with joy. Fill me with peace. Fill me with patience. Fill me with kindness. Fill me with goodness. Fill me with faithfulness. Fill me with gentleness. Fill me with self-control. Let me walk in your Spirit today as I leave here.
