Today we will explore the importance of faith in cultivating the life of the Spirit in us!
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord God, we approach your throne in praise! You are our refuge and strength, our very present help in trouble. Let us find in you today “the streams of the Holy Spirit that make (us) glad!” Let us rejoice that, in you, we will not be moved! You are faithful to help us as morning dawns. (based on Psalm 46:1, 4-5)
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the faithfulness and protection that God gives us as displayed in Proverbs 30:
“Every word of God proves true;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”
Proverbs 30:5
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
Colossians 2:6-7
And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:17-20
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:6-8
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
Matthew 17:17-20
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:6-8
Faith is arguably the most important component of our Christian lives. After all, it is through the gift of faith (given to us by the Holy Spirit) that we are saved (Eph 2:8)! Jesus seemed very impressed by people (especially non-Jews, Luke 7:9) who displayed great faith and had surprisingly harsh words for those who lacked it (see our Matthew 17 passage above). He told Bartimaeus, a blind man that he healed of his blindness, that it was his faith that made him well (Mark 10:52). And, in Mark 6, it seems that Jesus limited his mighty works in his hometown because of the unbelief of the people! We know from Hebrews 11:6, that without faith it is impossible to please God, and from our Mark 9 passage above, we learn that faith (or believing) is the key to doing the impossible! All that to say that there is a lot that seems to hinge on our faith, or lack thereof!
Most Christians have little, if any, doubt that, by faith, their sins are forgiven and they’ve been adopted into the family of God (but, if you have such doubts, then please come see us!). However, many struggle to believe that it is also by faith that we’re enabled to have victory in this life after our salvation (Gal. 2:20). Author Hannah Smith says that, “Doubting is such a universal habit (among Christians), that the only fitting and descriptive name that could be given to many of God’s children would have to be ‘Doubter’ instead of ‘Believer!’” These doubts, she says, “include most of the promises our Father has made to his children. They refuse to believe them until they can have more reliable proof of their being true rather than believing what the Bible clearly states. Then they wonder why they are walking in such darkness.”
Since we understand the bondage that doubt causes (see James 1 above), let us fight the battle for our faith! So much is at stake! Everything we are and do as Christians hinges on what we believe. So, how do we tackle unbelief in our lives? First, we must recognize that deliverance comes from God alone and that he will help us as we hand our doubts over to him in surrender. Second, we must choose to yield to the truths of God’s word. We have to decide if we will believe it all or not, which is a matter of our will, as we learned last week. Thirdly, we must agree with him that unbelief is a sin, and hold fast to Jesus in trust, receiving the truth that he is working his righteousness and purposes in us and repenting when we fail. Fourthly, as we walk forward, we need to ask him to help us catch every doubt that crosses our mind, as well as the lies and discouragements Satan throws at us, and replace them with the truth of God’s word. Then we will know the freedom Jesus wants to give us!
Fifthly and finally, we can increase our faith by reading the biographies of missionaries or other Christian people who have experienced things that we have not yet experienced. One good example of this is George Mueller’s, Answers to Prayer. Mr. Mueller was used in remarkable ways to provide for over 10,000 orphans during his lifetime. He never went into debt or asked anyone to supply his needs. He simply prayed and trusted (had faith!) that God would provide for him and for the orphans and God never failed to do so. Another of my absolute favorites is Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret. So powerful! It is sure to increase your faith!
Heavenly Father, have I let unbelief creep in and cripple my faith in some way? Is there some area in my life, in which I live in doubt, fear or resigned failure? Lord, help me to stand on your promises as they relate to these situations and circumstances! And show me the truth about who I am in you and how you want to help me walk in freedom!
Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
James 1:6-8
Yielding Prayer
It has been said that we consider our doubts to be more like “spiritual conflicts” within us, when they are actually better classified as “spiritual rebellions!” Our fight is a fight of faith and, the moment we give in to our doubts, “our fight ceases and our rebellion begins.” These are strong words! And yet, Lord, I sense their truth! Help me to believe my beliefs and doubt my doubts (not the opposite) and thereby obtain the victories yet to be had in this life, by faith!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 1 John 5:
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”
1 John 5:4
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
