Personal Worship

We continue today learning from David what it looks like to be confident in the Lord in the face of adversity.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into this time today, would you allow me to lay down all fears, worries, and anxieties at your feet? Allow me to set this time apart as a space to meet with the God who created all things and loves me personally. Fill me with your Spirit and give me eyes to see what you have for me in your Scripture today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Jeremiah 17…

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
    whose trust is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted by water,
    that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
    for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
    for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

       Jeremiah 17:7-8

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

      Psalm 62:5-8

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

      Psalm 62:5-8

David’s repetition is slightly different here. This time, he is commanding his soul to wait in silence. In our chaotic world, the natural resting place of our soul is not silence, so we must be purposeful with it. He inserts hope here. That our hope is from the Lord. He continues reminding himself who God is. He has one more shift. This time around, he adds that his glory rests on God. Glory is an odd word to use, but really,  here it’s the same as reputation. Reputations are a fickle business when we leave them in the hands of anyone but God. Here’s the reminder of what heaven’s opinion of you is. That God saw your brokenness and your inability to fix it. He sent his only beloved Son down to earth to take on flesh. To live the life you could not live and to die a horrific death that you deserved. That’s your glory when you trust in the Lord. David moves from personal to corporate when he commands the people to trust in him. The command to pour out our hearts before him. That’s prayer. The focus of David in the midst of adversity is to meet with the Lord in prayer. That is where we find refuge.

Ask

Lord, in you I find my life. It’s because of you that I live, move, and breathe. Teach me what it looks like to pour out my heart to you. Be my refuge today.

  1. Where do I need to command my soul to wait in silence?
  2. To whom or what have I placed my hope?
  3. To whom or what am I resting my glory?
  4. Am I pouring out my heart to the Lord? If not, how can I get into a rhythm?

Lord, revive us! Pour out your Holy Spirit on your Church and make those who are asleep come alive. Do the impossible in this world and make it your own. Our hope is in you.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

      Psalm 62:5-8

Yielding Prayer

Lord, in you I find my everything. Forgive me for trying to do all of this on my own. I pour out my heart to you today. You are my refue and I rest in you.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 14…

 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

      John 14:27

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
