Personal Worship

Today we remember that the gospel brings people who were once separated from God and from one another into peace through Jesus.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Jesus, let me behold your beauty today. By the power of your Holy Spirit let me experience the grace and love that can only come from a relationship with you.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 133…

Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when brothers dwell in unity!

       Psalm 133:1

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands—  remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.

       Ephesians 2:11-18

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Sin separates, divides, and creates hostility, but Jesus came to bring people near. Through his death, Christ tears down barriers and reconciles us to God and to one another. The church therefore becomes a community made up of people who may have little in common except Jesus. Our unity does not depend on identical backgrounds, personalities, ages, or preferences. We belong together because we have been brought to the same Father through the same Son by the same Spirit.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you remind me of the power of your blood that was poured out at Calvary.

  1. Do I tend to build relationships only with people who are like me?
  2. Is there a barrier between me and another believer that Jesus is calling me to address?
  3. Do I treasure the unity Christ purchased for his church?
  4. How could I help someone else experience genuine belonging this week?

Lord, revive your church by tearing down sinful divisions among us. Make our unity in Jesus unmistakable to the world.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Father, remove pride, prejudice, resentment, and selfishness from my heart. Teach me to receive every believer as someone Christ has brought near.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Colossians 1…

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

      Colossians 1:13-14

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
