Personal Worship

Today we remember that from its earliest days, the church was a community that shared worship, meals, possessions, burdens, mission, and everyday life.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are God, and I am not! I sit humbly before you and ask you to speak to me through the power of your Word. Show me favor and pour out your Spirit on me as I enter into this time.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 92…

They are planted in the house of the Lord;
    they flourish in the courts of our God.
They still bear fruit in old age;
    they are ever full of sap and green,
to declare that the Lord is upright;
    he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

       Psalm 92:13-15

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

       Hebrews 13:19-25

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Hebrews tells believers to consider how to stir one another up to love and good works and warns us not to neglect meeting together. Christian community requires intentional presence because encouragement cannot happen from a distance. Consumer Christianity asks, “What am I getting?” while covenant community asks, “How can I help my brothers and sisters keep following Jesus?” We cannot experience the depth of family while remaining anonymous. God calls us to draw near, hold fast, show up, encourage one another, and keep walking together.

Ask

Lord, in confidence, I get to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. I ask that you show me what it looks like to encourage one another around me.

  1. Am I intentionally present in the lives of other believers?
  2. Who encourages me to keep following Jesus?
  3. Whom am I currently encouraging toward love and good works?
  4. Where am I tempted to remain anonymous rather than truly known?

Lord, revive your church by replacing isolation with committed presence. Give us relationships that strengthen our faith and help us persevere.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Father, help me show up faithfully for the people you have placed around me. Make me attentive to opportunities to encourage others today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Galatians 6…

 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

       Galatians 6:9-10

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
