Personal Worship

Today we remember that healthy churches are multigenerational families in which mature believers intentionally invest their lives in those coming behind them.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are God, and I am not! I sit humbly before you and ask you to speak to me through the power of your Word. Show me favor and pour out your Spirit on me as I enter into this time.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 71…

O God, from my youth you have taught me,
and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
So even to old age and gray hairs,
O God, do not forsake me,
until I proclaim your might to another generation,
your power to all those to come.

       Psalm 71:17-18

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.

       Titus 2:1-8

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       Titus 2:1-8

Titus 2 gives us a picture of discipleship that happens through relationships across generations. Older believers are called to model godly character and intentionally teach younger believers how the gospel shapes ordinary life. God never intended discipleship to be limited to programs, classes, or professionals. Children, teenagers, young adults, parents, singles, and older adults all need relationships with believers in other seasons of life. A healthy church becomes a spiritual family where wisdom, faith, experience, and encouragement move from one generation to another.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me my place in the Body of Christ.

  1. Who is spiritually investing in me right now?
  2. Who am I intentionally investing in?
  3. Have I underestimated what God could teach me through someone from another generation?
  4. What experience or wisdom has God given me that could strengthen someone younger?

Lord, raise up spiritual mothers and fathers throughout your church. Give older generations humility and purpose, and younger generations teachability and hunger for wisdom.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

       Titus 2:1-8

Yielding Prayer

Father, make me both teachable and available. Give me people from whom I can learn and people into whose lives I can faithfully pour.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Timothy 2…

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

       2 Timothy 2:1-2

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
