Personal Worship

Today, we allow Jesus to redefine greatness for us, remembering that in his kingdom leadership is not about being served but about becoming a servant.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you have made me your child by the sacrifice of your only begotten Son. You know me by name and the hairs on my head. I ask that you pour out your favor on me and show me your glory as I listen for what you have to say to me today.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 84…

Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed!
For a day in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

       Psalm 84:9-10

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

       Mark 10:35-45

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James and John come to Jesus asking for positions of honor, revealing how naturally we are drawn toward recognition, influence, and importance. Jesus responds by completely redefining greatness, telling his disciples that whoever wants to become great must become a servant. In the kingdom of God, leadership is not measured by how many people serve us, but by how willingly we use what God has given us to serve others. Jesus himself is the perfect example, because he did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life for many. Whatever influence we have—in our homes, workplaces, churches, friendships, or communities; is something God has entrusted to us for the good of others. The question is not simply whether we have influence, but whether we use it the way Jesus would.

Ask

Lord, redefine greatness in my life. Show me what true greatness means as I follow after you.

  1. How do I naturally define greatness and success?
  2. Am I more concerned with being recognized or with being useful to others?
  3. Where has God given me influence that I could use more intentionally to serve?
  4. Who is one person I can practically serve today without expecting anything in return?

Lord, revive your church with servant-hearted leadership. Raise up men and women who care more about faithfulness than recognition and more about serving people than holding positions. Protect your church from the pursuit of power and make us look increasingly like Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I yield my desire for recognition and status to you. Whatever influence you have entrusted to me, help me use it for the good of others and the glory of your name. Open my eyes to the people around me whom I can serve today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Galatians 6…

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

      Galatians 6:9

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
