Personal Worship

This week we are thinking about the brevity of life and what we do with it while we are here on this earth.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I come to you praying the Words from Matthew 7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.  Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Lord, I come asking and knocking today trusting that you are the Good Father.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in John 6…

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

       John 6:35

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

       Deuteronomy 30:15-20

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Moses before he dies sets two paths before the people of Israel. We like to make this life complex and there are complexities, but Moses breaks down all of our lives into two options. The first is defined by life and goodness. The second is a life of death and evil. That’s it. What differentiates the two? It is our obedience and love for God. Will we follow his ways or will we go our own way? One leads to life and one leads to death.

Ask

Lord, I want life and goodness and all you have for me in this life. I ask that you show me my life now and show me what path I am on.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What does the path of life look like? What does the path of death look like?
  3. To who and what does Satan tempt me to turn away from God?
  4. Where do I need to ask the Holy Spirit to renew my spirit of obedience to God?

Lord, take these dead bones and breathe life into them. Take this life and animate it by the power of your Holy Spirit. Fill this earth with your glory. Bring those who are lost into the Kingdom of God. You are the God whose power is limitless and we ask that you do what only you can do and bring revival to our world.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I want the path of life. Forgive me for all the times I try to do it on my own. Your Word is clear that life is only found when I am connected to you. Turn my eyes and heart from the idols of this world and bring me back into obedience to you.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 55…

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

       Isaiah 55:8-9

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
