Personal Worship

We come to one of Jesus’ more famous line when thinking about compassion.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Jesus, you came to this world as the Word. The True Word who entered into time and space. Enter into this time with me now. I seek you, and let me find you. Meet with me now by the power of your Holy Spirit.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 23…

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

       Psalm 23:4

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

      Matthew 25:31-40

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Jesus teaches us about his Second Coming in our passage today. Everyone will be divided into two groups. At the heart of the groupings is how we show compassion here on this earth. Jesus likens us to caring for one another to us caring for him! A transformed life by the power of the gospel leads to a compassionate and merciful life.

Ask

Lord, you are God and I am not. Remind me that you are coming back and let that transform the way I care for those around me today.

  1. How aware am I of Christ’s presence in the people around me—especially those in need?
  2. What opportunities do I have right now to serve “the least of these” in my community?
  3. When have I overlooked someone Christ may have wanted me to care for?
  4. How can I make service and compassion a consistent part of my walk with Jesus?

Lord, I ask that you would revive the Christians who have fallen into a cold or dead state. Remind us that you are our first love and bring us back to you. Restore what has been broken and pour out your Holy Spirit!

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the King who serves and the Savior who identifies with the least and the lost. Open my eyes to see you in the faces of those who are hungry, hurting, or forgotten. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Help me to serve not for recognition but out of love for You. I yield my comfort, my time, and my resources to Your kingdom purposes. Let my hands become Your hands and my heart reflect Your compassion. May my life bear witness that I have truly known and loved You. Amen.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Thessalonians…

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

      2 Thessalonians 3:16

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
