Personal Worship

We end the week thinking about the first Advent candle we will light this coming Sunday and what that means.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I enter into Advent let me experience the anticipation and the desire of God entering into humanity. You are the Creator who enters into his creation. You are the Author of Life that steps onto the page. Let me experience the invitation to surrender to a love that does that for me.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in 1 John 4…

We love because he first loved us.

       1 John 4:19

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
    that the mountains might quake at your presence—

as when fire kindles brushwood
    and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
    and that the nations might tremble at your presence!

When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
    you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.

From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.

You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?

We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.

But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    we are all the work of your hand.

Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
    and remember not iniquity forever.
    Behold, please look, we are all your people.

Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
    Zion has become a wilderness,
    Jerusalem a desolation.

Our holy and beautiful house,
    where our fathers praised you,
has been burned by fire,
    and all our pleasant places have become ruins.

Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord?
    Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

       Isaiah 64:1-12

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

From of old no one has heard

    those who remember you in your ways.

       Isaiah 64:1-12

Each Sunday we light a different candle to draw our attention to different parts of the Christmas story. This Sunday we will light the Prophets candle. Prophets were the men of God that cried out to God’s people when they turned from the Lord. It was a lonely and oftentimes dangerous job. A job that was an official office in the Old Testament, but now as his people this is part of all of our lives. To go into a broken and sinful world and tell them about a Savior who loves them and died for them. It is a beautiful responsibility that God has called us to.

Ask

Lord, I ask that this season you give me the courage to call people to experience your love. Let me go into my workplace and into my family and show them that the Light of the World has come and they no longer have to walk in darkness.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What does it mean in my life that I am the clay and God is the potter?
  3. Who can I invite to church this Advent?

Lord, the Incarnation teaches me that there is no where you won’t go for the sake of your children. Come again by the power of your Holy Spirit this Advent season. Show us the darkness we are living in and bring light that casts out the darkness. Bring many to faith that are desperate to experience a love that only you can give.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
    that the mountains might quake at your presence—

as when fire kindles brushwood
    and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
    and that the nations might tremble at your presence!

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are the God who has come for his people. Let my heart shout for joy knowing that is the God whom I love and serve. Fill me with your Spirit today and let me spread the good news of Jesus coming to earth to die.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 6…

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

       John 6:37

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
